SOLUTION: There are provided a polyhydroxyalkanoate containing at least one unit selected from the group consisting of units (1), (2), (3) and (4) in the image; and a method for producing the same; and application of the same to e.g., a charge controller. Microorganisms having such ability as converting the parent compound into the corresponding PHA are preferably used in the method.

SOLUTION: A PHA copolymer comprising a 3-hydroxy-ω-(4-vinylphenyl)alkanoic acid unit and a 3-hydroxy-ω-substituted alkanoic acid unit is produced by using an ω-(4-biphenyl)alkanoic acid and an ω-substituted alkanoic acid substituted with a group containing any one of cyclic structural units of a phenyl structural unit, a thienyl structural unit and a cyclohexyl structural unit as raw materials by using the microorganism having the PHA producing ability. SOLUTION: The PHA mainly containing 3-hydroxy-ω-(2-thienylsulfanyl) alkanoate units from the raw material of ω-(2-thienylsulfanyl)alkanoate is treated with sodium hypochlorite to convert the -S- bonds to the sulfone structure (-SO2 -). In addition, the methylene groups adjacent to the sulfur atoms are substituted with Cl atoms, whereby a novel PHA bearing specific chemical structures is obtained.
