    • A polyester material contains as fire retardant a compound Ar(Br)m(Cl)nR or Ar(Br)m(Cl)nOR, where Ar is an aryl residue, m is 1 or more, n is 0, 1 or 2 and R is H or an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl group which may be halogenated, the compound containing at least two nuclear Br atoms per molecule, and providing at least 1.5 wt. per cent Br in the polyester resin. Suitable polyesters include commercial terephthalate polyesters and solution of glycol phthalate maleate in styrene. Suitable aromatic bromine compounds are tribromophenol, tetrabromo -, pentabromo -, pentabromo - ethoxy -, pentabromo - propoxy -, pentabromo - allyloxy-, and chloro-dibromo-allyloxy-benzene, and tribromo-, pentabromo-, tribromo-allyloxy-, and chloro - dibromo - toluene, and hexabromo - diphenyl ether, dibromo-diphenyl, dibromonaphthalene, 2:4 - dibromo - 1 - methyl - naphthalene and 1:5-dibromo-anthracene. The preferred Br content of the resin is 10-15 wt. per cent. There is preferably also incorporated in the polyester Sb2O3 amounting at least to 1 p.b.w. per 8 p.b.w. of bromo compound, preferably 0.5-1.5 p.b.w., per p.b.w. In examples various unsaturated polyester-styrene resins are mixed with a bromo-compound, benzoyl or MEK peroxide, and optionally also a Co naphthenate accelerator, CaCO3 filler and Sb2O3 and trixylyl phosphate as synergistic fire-retarding agents. A saturated polyester is mixed with pentabromotoluene and Sb2O3 (Example 10). The unsaturated resins are made into panels with or without glass fibre reinforcement. The bromo compounds used are tribromophenol, tribromotoluene, tribromophenyl allyl ether, pentabromophenyl allyl ether, pentabromophenol, pentabromotoluene, tetrabromobenzene and 4-chloro-tetrabromophenol.

    • Coating compositions comprising a natural or synthetic polymeric film-forming agent and a liquid vehicle contain at least one fire-retardant compound Ar(Br)m(Cl)nR or Ar(Br)m(Cl)nOR1 where Ar is an aryl residue, m \sF 1, n \sF 0, R is hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl, halogenated alkyl or alkenyl, aralkyl, or halogenated aralkyl, and R1 is not hydrogen but otherwise is chosen from the same alternatives as R, there being at least 2 nuclear bromine atoms per molecule, and the total fire-retardant providing a bromine content of at least 0.5% by weight relative to the film forming resin. Specified fire-retardants are tetrabromobenzene, pentabromo-, tribromo- and chlorodibromo-toluene, dibromo- and 2:4-dibromo-1-methyl naphthalene, 1:5-dibromoanthracene, pentabromophenyl ethyl-, n-propyl-, or allyl ether, tribromophenyl allyl ether, chlorodibromophenyl allyl ether, and 3,5-dibromo-2,4,6-trichlorophenyl allyl ether. Specified film-formers include alkyd and polyurethane resins, ethyl cellulose and emulsion resins, for example a long oil linseed pentaerythritol alkyd resin (Examples 1-9), or a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (Examples 10-20). Auxiliary fire-retardants such as Bi, As or Sb oxide or sulphide or an organic antimonate may be present, especially antimony oxide in a weight ratio to the bromine compound of 1.25-2.6:1. The alkyd resin paint of Examples 1-9 also contained TiO2, white spirit, lead naphthenate and methyl ethyl ketoxime. The polyvinyl acetate emulsion paint of Examples 10-20 contained TiO2, dolomite, talc, and suspending and dispersing agents. The ethyl cellulose paint of Example 21 contained TiO2, tritolyl phosphate, a modified pentaerythritol rosin ester, toluene, isopropanol, butyl acetate, n-butanol and butyl oxitol. The polyurethane paint of Example 22 contained TiO2, "Irgalite" yellow 10 G (Registered Trade Mark), cyclohexanone, butyl acetate and a polyester.ALSO:Coating compositions comprising a natural or synthetic polymeric film-forming agent and a liquid vehicle contain at least one fire-retardant compound Ar(Br)m(Cl)nR or Ar(Br)m(Cl)nOR1, where Ar is an aryl residue, m \sF 1, n \sF 0, R is hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl, halogenated alkyl or alkenyl, aralkyl or halogenated aralkyl and R1 is not hydrogen but otherwise is chosen from the same alternatives as R, there being at least 2 nuclear bromine atoms per molecule of the compound, the total fire-retardant providing a bromine content of at least 0.5% by weight relative to the film-forming resin. Specified fire-retardants are tetrabromobenzene, penta-bromo -, tribromo -, and chlorodibromo-toluene, dibromo -, and 2:4 - dibromo - 1 - methyl naphthalene, 1:5-dibromoanthracene, pentabromophenyl ethyl -, n - propyl -, or allyl ether, tribromophenyl allyl ether, chloro-dibromophenyl allyl ether, and 3,5-dibromo-2,4, 6-trichloro phenyl allyl ether. Shellac, copal, gum dammar and rubber are specified film-formers. Auxiliary fire-retardants such as bismuth, arsenic or antimony oxide or sulphide or an organic antimonate may be present, especially antimony oxide in a weight ratio to the bromine compound of 1.25-2.6:1. All the examples relate to synthetic resin compositions.

    • A granular expandable polystyrene composition contains as a fire-retardant a minor amount of a compound of formula Ar(Br)m(Cl)nR or Ar(Br)x(Cl)yOR where Ar is an aryl residue, m is 1-4, n is 0-2, x is 1 or more, y is 0 or an integer and R is hydrogen, a straight or branched chain alkyl group which may be halogenated, a straight or branched chain alkenyl group or a halogenated aryl group; there being at least 2 nuclear bromine atoms per molecule of the above compound. The compound may be tetrabromobenzene, tribromophenol, pentabromophenyl (allyl, ethyl or n-propyl) ether, an isomer of tribromotoluene or tribromophenyl allyl ether, chlorodibromotoluene, chlorodibromophenyl allyl ether, hexabromodiphenyl ether, dibromodiphenyl, dibromonaphthalene; 2,4 - dibromo - 1 - methylnaphthalene; 1,5 - dibromoanthracene; pentabromophenyl dibromopropyl ether, pentabromophenol or tetrabromochlorophenol. The composition may also contain dicumyl or di-tert. butyl peroxide, tert. butyl peracetate or cumene hydroperoxide. The compositions may be made by polymerizing styrene in the presence of the fire-retardant compound, polystyrene granules, benzoyl peroxide, water and petroleum ether as expanding agent and the resulting polymer may be granulated, expanded by heating in steam and then moulded into a block.

    • Compositions comprise a synthetic thermoplastic polymer, selected from polyamides, polystyrene and polyolefins derived from straight-chain olefins, one or more flame retardants and up to 10 weight per cent based on the polymer of an organophilic cation-modified clay. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and nylon. Specified fire retardants are chlorinated paraffins, trichlorethyl phosphate, tribromophenol, ammonium chloride, ammonium bromide, phosphoric acid esters, antimony trioxide and arsenic trioxide. The clay may be a medium or high exchange capacity clay modified with an onium base, e.g. an ammonium, phosphonium, arsonium, stibonium, oxonium, sulphonium, selenonium, telluronium, stannonium or iodonium base, or associated with an aliphatic amine containing at least 12 carbon atoms, or a derivative thereof such as may be obtained by fusing said amines with stearamide, stearonitrile or cetyl alcohol. The compositions may comprise other conventional ingredients such as plasticizers, pigments, fillers, stabilizers, anti-oxidants and antistatic agents. The clay may be dispersed in a volatile or non-volatile medium, e.g. trichlorethylene, toluene, xylene, white spirit, paraffin wax or polyethylene wax; and is preferably treated with an organic polar liquid, e.g. methanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or propylene carbonate, before incorporation in the polymer. Alternatively a polymer additive may be prepared by mixing the clay and flame retardant in the presence of a volatile organic liquid, adding the polar liquid and then mixing and evaporating the liquids to obtain a mixture in gel form. Examples describe compositions comprising polyethylene, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium hectorite and (1-4) chlorinated paraffin and antimony trioxide, (5 and 6) trichlorethyl phosphate, (7 and 8) tritolyl phosphate and (13-16) chlorinated paraffin; polyethylene, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium montmorillonite and (9) ammonium bromide; polyethylene, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium sepiolite and (10 and 11) trichlorethyl phosphate, and (12, 17 and 18) chlorinated paraffin; polypropylene, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium hectorite and (19) chlorinated paraffin, (20 and 21) chlorinated paraffin and antimony trioxide, and (22 and 23) trichlorethyl phosphate; nylon 11, trichlorethyl phosphate and (24) dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium hectorite, and (25) an organophilic zeolite clay; and polystyrene, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium hectorite and (26) trichlorethyl phosphate.
