    • Electro-hydraulic control system for an automatic power transmission providing forward ratios, neutral and reverse gear ratio in which forward ratio changes are effected under power by releasing one clutch (12 or 13) interconnecting the transmission input and output through one engaged gearset simultaneously with engaging another clutch (13 or 12 respectively) interconnecting the input and output through another engaged gearset. The control system comprises five hydraulic gear actuators (GA1, GA2, GA3, GA4, GAR) each for engaging and disengaging a separate gearset and three electro-hydraulic valves (A,B,C) for controlling the supply of hydraulic fluid from a pump (PP) to the hydraulic gear actuators in response to ratio selection signals derived in an electronic control system (EC). A manually operable mode selector valve (MV) is arranged to supply the electrohydraulic valves with fluid under pressure from pump (PP) when a driving mode is selected thereby but to cut off fluid pressure supply from the electro-hydraulic valves when a non-driving mode such as neutral is selected. Reverse gear actuator (GAR) and first gear actuator (GA1) are selected by the same ratio selection signals (A=0, B=1,C=1,) and pressure is distributed to the appropriate one of these gear selectors through the mode selector valve in dependence on whether a forward driving mode or reverse is selected thereby.

    • A master cylinder has a stepped bore in which a piston (13) separates a high pressure chamber (12) from a low pressure chamber (26). A primary seal (17) is slidable in a smaller diameter bore portion (14) and an atmospheric seal (18) is slidable in a larger diameter bore portion (15). Any air seeping past the atmospheric seal (18) is kept from the region of the primary seal (17) by an auxiliary seal (29) and escapes into a reservoir (27) through an inlet port (28). Passageways (31,32,33) in the piston allow air free fluid into the region behind the primary seal.

    • A vehicle pressure proportioning valve of the kind in which the operation of a stepped spring loaded proportioning valve plunger (12) is modified by a control mass (36) operative to block a control port (33) above a predetermined inlet pressure and so prevent pressure reaching a control plunger (29). If the vehicle is lightly laden the control mass (36) rolls away from the control port (33) and is ineffective to prevent pressure reaching the control plunger (29). To reduce the need for more than one biassing spring, the control plunger (29) is situated in the same stepped bore as the proportioning valve plunger and may be integral therewith.

    • The transmission comprises gear trains each being one of a set providing a series of increasing speed ratios and two clutches (12, 13) independently operable and providing alternative drive paths through the gear trains between a common input shaft (11) and a common output shaft (14). The gear trains of alternate ratios in the set are driven respectively through one and the other clutch. One clutch (13) is arranged to drive the output shaft (14) through a first four wheel gear train or through a second four wheel gear train, the gear trains having common first and second gear wheels (21, 22 and 23, 24 or 21, 22 and 23, 30). The other clutch (12) is arranged to drive the output shaft (14) either directly or through a third four wheel gear train which includes gear wheels which are members of at least one of the first and second mentioned four wheel gear trains. The second and third gear wheels of each respective four wheel train are coaxial about a layshaft (15) and one of the gear wheels (24; 30) on the layshaft (15) is journalled for rotation thereon and is selectively drivably connectable to the layshaft.
