    • In an apparatus for controlling charging of a main capacitor of a flash unit, comparison means (27 to 36, 40 and 42) are used to detect the timing at which a voltage V across a main capacitor (16) reaches a reference voltage V₁ at which flash photographs can be taken, and a timer is used to detect the fact that a predetermined time period has elapsed after such detection so that the charging of the main capacitor is stopped (Steps 106, 108, 124 to 128 and 118 to 122). When the voltage V across the main capacitor drops to the reference voltage V₁ as the result of spontaneous discharge, recharging is performed (Steps 130 to 136), and thus the above processing is repeated. When such processing is performed over a predetermined time period or predetermined times, recharging is no more performed. In an apparatus having another arrangement, flash photography is permitted (Steps 200 to 214 and 216) if a predetermined value is greater than the time period that has elapsed until the ensuing shutter release after the voltage V across the main capacitor C M has reached the reference voltage V₂ (> V₁) at which flash photographs can be taken, but if the aforesaid time period is not less than said predetermined value, flash photography is inhibited to restart the charging of the main capacitor (Steps 200 to 214, 222 and 224).

The driving of said cam mechanism (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) cannot be stopped when said detecting area (Pos1) signalises a position of the optical system (1, L1, L2) in said transient state (20b, 21a).
