    • 747,890. Rotary wing aircraft. YUAN, S. W., and KARMAN, T. VON. March 25, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 8751/54. Class 4. In a rotary wing aircraft, a rotor, assembly comprises a wing of substantially symmetrical elongated flattened oval cross-section, a flap movably disposed on the wing in proximity to the trailing edge thereof, control means for varying the position of said flap with respect to said wing, and suction means for boundary layer control. A block 64, secured to the inner surface of the trailing edge of the rotor blade, has a T-shaped portion 66 engaged on opposite sides by projections 67 secured to a movable flap 18, a bracket 69 on the flap being connected by a link 71 to one arm of a bellcrank 73 pivotally mounted on a longitudinal supporting member 74. A block 75 is slidably mounted in grooves in the member 74 and it is pivotally connected by a link 78 to the bellcrank 73 and by a further link 79 to a bellcrank SO pivotally mounted on a collar 81 fast with a tubular member 84 described later. The bell-crank 80 is connected by a link 88 to a yoke member 83 provided with pins 85 which slide in shallow grooves 86 in the member 84, the member 83 being connected by rods 32 to a non-rotating swash-plate 35. The rods 32 have T-shaped ends, each slidably engaged in a circular recess in the swashplate 35 to permit relative movement therebetween and the swashplate is mounted on a part-spherical head of a sleeve 33 mounted on the tube 84. Simultaneous movement of the flaps 18 in the same sense is achieved by vertical movement of the sleeve 33 under the control of a rack-andpinion mechanism 39-42 and cyclical movement of the flaps is controlled by conventional linkwork 36 connected to the pilot's contiol column 89, rotational driving and relative sliding movements between the link members connected to the column being provided by internally splined sleeves 93, 99 engaging the respective rods 92, 100. In order to maintain airflow round the flaps when they are extended and to increase the lift of a retreating block the tube 84 is connected to a source of suction and at its upper end has a T-connection with spanwise ducts 23 in the rotor blades. Each duct connects with a plurality of small tubes 24 communicating with apertures 25 in the trailing edge surface of the blade. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown), utilizes the additional suction effect created by a chordwise venturi at the tip of the blade. In other embodiments the flap is pivoted to the blade for movement between a position adjacent the outer surface thereof to an extended position and there may be flaps at both leading and trailing edges, the suction devices being correspondingly extended into both leading and trailing edges of the blade. There may be a plurality of flaps along an edge of a blade and the invention is applicable to a rotor having any number of blades.
