    • The invention discloses water-based paint compositions which comprise a copolymer of polymerizable unsaturated monomer having polyoxyalkylene chain; hydroxyl-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer having no polyoxyalkylene chain; polymerizable unsaturated monomer having at least one cationic functional group selected from the group consisting of tertiary amino groups and quaternary ammonium salt groups; at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of bridged alicyclic hydrocarbon group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomers and C6-18 alkyl group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomers; and other polymerizable unsaturated monomer: a hydroxyl-containing resin: and a melamine resin having a weight-average molecular weight within the range of 1,000-5,000. The invention also discloses film-forming methods using the compositions.

    • The present invention provides a method for forming a multi-layer coating film by applying a clear coating (B) on the film of a leafing type aluminum flake-containing metallic coating (A), which method comprises forming a film of the metallic coating (A), curing the film, applying thereon a composition (C) containing a polymer formed from an unsaturated monomer having a phosphoric acid group represented by --O--PO(OH)(R.sub.1) (wherein R.sub.1 is a hydroxyl group, a phenyl group or a C.sub.1-20 alkyl group) and a hydroxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer, and then applying the clear coating (B) on the film of the composition (C). The method can form a multi-layer coating film improved in interlayer adhesivity between the metallic coating film and the clear coating film, without reducing the excellent effects and metallic feeling provided by a metallic coating film containing leafing type aluminum flake.

    • The present invention provides (1) a self-crosslinking resin (I) having a carboxyl group, a blocked isocyanate group and a hydroxyl group in the molecule and characterized in that the resin is prepared from a vinyl polymer (A) having at least two free isocyanate groups in the molecule and a polyester resin (B) having at least two hydroxyl groups and at least one carboxyl group in the molecule by reacting some of the hydroxyl groups of the resin (B) with some of the free isocyanate groups of the polymer (A), and subsequently reacting a blocking agent with all the remaining free isocyanate groups, and (2) a self-crosslinking resin (II) having a carboxyl group, a blocked isocyanate group and a hydroxyl group in the molecule and characterized in that the resin is prepared from a vinyl polymer (C) having a free isocyanate group and a blocked isocyanate group in the molecule and the polyester resin (B) having at least two hydroxyl groups and at least one carboxyl group in the molecule by reacting some of the hydroxyl groups of the resin (B) with all the free isocyanate groups of the polymer (C).
