    • A Micro Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) which is based on MEMS accelerometers 27 and gyro sensors is developed for real-time recognition of human hand motions, especially as used in the context of writing on a surface. Motion is recorded by a rate gyro 29 and an accelerometer 27 and communicated to a Bluetooth module 25, possibly to a computer 33 which may be 20 to 30 feet or more from the sensor 21. The motion information generated and communicated is combined with appropriate filtering and transformation algorithms to facilitate a complete Digital Writing System that can be used to record handwriting on any surface, or on no surface at all. The overall size of an IMU can be less than 26 mm x 20 mm x 20 mm, and may include micro sensors, a processor, and wireless interface components. The Kalman filtering algorithm is preferably used to filter the noise of sensors to allow successful transformance of hand motions into recognizable and recordable English characters. The immediate advantage is the facilitation of a digital interface with both PC and mobile computing devices and perhaps to enable wireless sensing.

[Also in Division F2] The wheels of a toy vehicle are actuated by the movement of a segmented cogwheel which engages, via idler cogs, with a cog secured to an axle of the vehicle, the arrangement being such that the movement of the segmented cogwheel in forward and reverse directions causes an idler, fixed to a shaft mounted at two spaced portions for lateral movement in two slots, to be carried in and out of driving contact with the cog on the axle of the vehicle. The motive power for the segmented cog-wheel may be provided by a spring compressed by moving a part of the vehicle. In Fig. 1 a spring (not shown) causes container 1 of a toy dumper truck to pivot about 3 away from chassis 2. Depression of 1 towards 2 compresses the spring and moves segmented cogwheel 4 downwards (reverse direction). Sets of cogs 6, 7 and 8, 9 rotate to cause a shaft bearing cogs 10, 11 to be moved in slot 12 to disengage cog 11 from cog 13 secured to an axleof driving wheel 14. Release of pressure on container 1 with consequent release of the spring causes reverse movements such that the shaft bearing cogs 10, 11 is moved in slot 12 so that drive is transmitted to cog 13 from cog 11. The slot 12 extends radially of cog 13 in a direction parallel to a tangent of cog 9. Each pair of cogs 6 and 7, 8 and 9, 10 and 11 is constructed in a plastics material formed as a unit 16 (Fig. 2) and located on a metal axle by means of sleeve 15 to lessen the risk of slipping.

    • A roller shaft structure of roller blind includes a rear cap as a shaft for adjusting the twisting extent of a restoring spring. A bead chain wheel and the rear cap and the restoring spring are respectively connected with two ends of the roller shaft. The rear cap includes a rotary disc connected with the restoring spring, a sleeve fitted with the roller shaft, a lug for mounting the roller shaft on a wall bracket and a locating pin. The rotary disc is rotatable to twist the restoring spring. The locating pin serves to locate the restoring spring in the twisted state. When the bead chain wheel is operated to roll up the roller blind sheet, the restoring spring is released to provide an assistant restoring force to save strength.
