[Class 51 (i)] A firebridge for a boiler furnace comprises a channel-shaped dead plate A upon which rest a number of solid blocks G, each of which slopes upwardly from the top of the front wall of the channel at an angle that will enable clinker and ash to be pushed over it and is then curved and slopes downwardly at a steep angle to the level of the bottom of the dead plate, the rear wall of the block overhanging the channel A. The front end of each block G is formed with a foot G to rest against the front wall of the channel and a groove G extending across the underside to fit over the rear wall of the channel. A brick-work bridge H is built across the flue to form a pit into which ash, &c., is deposited ; a door C is provided in front of the ashpit, from which ashes can be raked out from under the firebars.

[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A wash boiler or other liquid-containing vessel A is connected by the draw-off pipe J to a chamber C containing a float B having a reduced portion b projecting downward through a slightly larger conduit F. The top of the float is connected by a rod b 1 to a pivoted lever d' carrying a mercury switch D. When the water level is high, the switch D is closed and the heater energized, the part b of the float being above the outlet pipe. When the water level falls to a predetermined point, the switch D is tilted to cut off the current, and the member b enters the outlet pipe and restricts the outflow of water so that the heater may cool before all the water is drawn off. In a modification, the pipe J is connected to the vessel A at a predetermined distance from the bottom, and a small branch pipe a 1 is connected at the bottom, so that only the latter is in operation when the level falls below the pipe J.

Sheet separators and carriers; pile supports; sheet-guides pusher-feeds for single sheets.- Sheets or envelopes are separated from a pile 20, Fig. 3, and fed to a printing-couple 3, 4, or to a gumming or punching machine, by mechanism comprising a rotating suction roller 7 formed with two series of suction ports 12, 13, which are constructed as shown in Fig. 5, the member of each series in turn being connected by a side opening 15 with an aperture in a fixed drum fitted to the side of the roller 7. The sheets may be fed from the top of an automatically raised pile, or as shown in Fig. 3, from the bottom of a pile carried by an adjustable support 21 so arranged that the bottom sheet is tangential to the roller 7, the separated sheets being fed past an adjustable fence formed of two members 31 adjustable vertically by screws 32. The sides of the pile are restrained by adjustable guides 27. An adjustably mounted roller 33 assists to forward the separated sheet, and a guide 38 directs the sheets to rollers 39, 40 which forward the sheets between the flared end; of side fences 48 carried by side guides 47, along which the sheets are carried by projections or pawls 46 on chains 45. A spring arm 57 exerts a drag on the sheet and keeps its rear edge in contact with the projections 46; two other spring arms 59 press the sheet into contact with the guides 47 with a pressure adjustable by screws 85, and these arms keep the leading edges at right angles to the line of travel. Rollers 62, 63 driven faster than the chains 45 cause the sheets to be spaced apart, and adjustable spring arms 67 prevent the sheets from rising as they pass to the printing-couple 3, 4.

Firebars and grates; air supply, regulating. - Centrally pivoted plates supported at intervals of their length are arranged longitudinally at the bottoms of compartments extending along the underside of a grate and are adapted to be operated independently or simultaneously. As shown in Fig. 1, the pivoted plates C are arranged at the buttons of compartments formed by partitions B under the grate A. A pivoted plate C suitable for a moving firebox D of the box girder type is shown in Figs. 4, 6 and 7. The plate is supported in bearings c and actuated by a rod c through gearing c . c'. When applying the invention to a stationary box girder bar the gear wheels may be dispensed with. The plates may be operated simultaneously through gearing.

Mangles, boards for.-A combined drip and mangling board, and also the back mangling board are each made adjustable to three positions without removal from between the mangle frames. Each frame 1 has a stud 2 in the centre of an approximately circular groove 3 formed with raised edges 4 and having three notches 5, 6, 7. The combined drip and mangling board 8 has attached to each end a bracket 9 with a slot 10 adapted to engage the stud 2, and with a pin 11 which moves in the groove 3 until it slips into the desired notch. In a modification, the groove is formed on the bracket 9, and the pin 11 is made as a fixed projection from the frame. In further modifications, the bracket, secured either to the frame or the board, is made in the form of a raised circle with three notches, which may be engaged by a spring- pressed catch. The back-board x has at each end a bracket 17 with a pin 19, which can engage any of the notches 14, 15, 16, while a pin 12 projecting from the raised portion in which the notches are formed simultaneously engages a slot 18 formed in the bracket 17.

[Class 138 (ii).] A wringer is driven at one of two speeds from a hand wheel or crank handle secured to a stud L eccentrically mounted in a bush G which can be rotated in a boss f in a plate F in which the bearing for one end of the lower roller shaft C is formed. A gear wheel K is secured to the stud L so that, on rotation of the bush G, it may engage with an internally toothed wheel A fast on the lower roller shaft, or with an idler D in gear with another gear wheel B fast on the lower roller shaft, or into an intermediate position wherein it engages neither gear wheel. The bush G is rotated by means of a hand lever H which is provided with a spring-pressed plunger for engagement with one or other of two positioning holes formed in the boss in which the bush rotates.
