    • 1442. Pickering, W. S., and Grove, H. Jan. 20. Purifiers.-In centre valves for gas purifiers, more particularly such as are described in Specification No. 7087, A.D. 1902, separate controlling-valves for the inlet and outlet of each compartment of the purifier are dispensed with, the course of the gases being altered, as required, by hydraulic means. In one form of valve, Figs. 1 and 2, a rectangular casing a forms the main inlet chamber, and a diagonal tubular casing c within it forms the main outlet chamber. Combined inlet chambers e', e , e , and outlet chambers d, d , d , are provided on the sides of the casing a, and communicate with the main inlet and outlet by apertures y. Each inlet and outlet chamber has a vertical partition x not quite reaching the bottom, and adjacent chambers are connected by a chamber containing a partition j which does not reach to the bottom. Apertures w communicate with the inlet and outlet chambers. When water is supplied to adjacent inlet and outlet chambers and rises above the lower edge of the partition x, communication with the main inlet and outlet is cut off and the gas passes from the outlet d of one compartment of the purifier through the hood to the inlet e' of the next compartment. In order to cut out one compartment, two connecting-hoods are flooded and also the inlet and outlet chambers of the compartment to be cut out. The inlet chamber of the compartment to be worked first and the outlet of that to be worked last are emptied. In a modification, the connecting-chambers are placed between the inlet and outlet chambers on each side of the casing. Fig. 6 shows a form of valve suitable for purifiers in line, two valves being used for four purifiers. Two sets of valves are employed, each having a common inlet chamber b and outlet chamber c. Pipes connect the outlet of the second purifier with the inlet of the third, and the outlet of the fourth with the inlet of the first. The main inlet b and outlet c of one set of valves are completely closed. The dotted lines s , s indicate the outlets from the purifiers and s , s the inlets, the pipes connecting the purifiers entering apertures u , v . Inlets and outlets b , c are used when the pipes are connected to the valve by an elbow, and alternative inlets b , c when the pipes are connected to a separate fitting. When two purifiers only are used, both ends of the casing are formed like the right hand end of the modification shown in Fig. 6. A sectional elevation of a valve for two purifiers on the ground is shown in Fig. 9. The casing a attached to the side of the purifiers, is divided into alternate inlet chambers e and outlet chambers d, supplied by a main inlet pipe b and outlet pipe c. The two middle chambers d, e communicate by an aperture t' in the partition t, and the end chambers d', e communicate with a conduit r, from which depend hoods e', d , into which project inlet pipes e and outlet pipes d . The hoods may be closed by a water seal, as required, an additional seal being provided by suitable partitions. The inlet and outlet chambers are furnished with apertures e , d , and partitions t are provided for flooding the central chambers d, e. Water or other fluid may be supplied to the inlet, outlet, and connecting chambers of these valves by a controlling cock operated by one handle.

    • 9244. Pickering, W. S. April 23. Purifiers; valves.-In a purifier in which, owing to the compartments being arranged in a series of rows or otherwise, the employment of a centre valve is inconvenient or inadmissible, valves are arranged upon the side of the purifier l, which is provided with main inlet and outlet conduits g,j, communicating, respectively, with each compartment of the purifier, and with a compartment-tocompartment conduit h. The inlet valve a and the outlet valve b are, preferably, mounted in one casing, but have separate valve chambers c, i, which serve as conduits for the gas in the manner described in Specification No. 7087, A.D. 1902. In the inlet-valve chamber c of each compartment, the valve a may be pressed against either of the opposed seats e, f formed by the ends of the connections d, h , according as it is required to let gas pass from the main inlet conduit g or from the branch conduit h connected to the outlet-valve chamber i of the next compartment. The outlet valve b and valve chamber i are of similar construction, the connection d communicating with the inlet of the next compartment. Thus, the last-inlet-valve chamber of the series being connected to the first inlet-valve chamber of the series, the inlet to, and the outlet from, the purifier may take place from any one of the compartments, and one of the compartments may be put out of the gas circuit in rotation to permit of the purifying- material in the respective compartments being successively renewed.

    • 7087. Pickering, W. S. March 22. Purifiers.-A centre valve has a common inlet chamber b, a common outlet chamber c, and divided valve casings g, each containing a pair of double-faced valves i, h. Each purifier communicates directly with an inlet chamber l in one valve casing g, and with an outlet chamber k in the next valve casing. Each valve, if moved outwards, places the corresponding inlet or outlet chamber l or k of a purifier in communication with the common inlet or outlet chamber b or c ; if the two valves in one casing are moved inwards, the outlet and inlet chambers of adjacent purifiers are connected together through a cover j. The gas can thus be passed through the purifiers in series : or any purifier may be cut out by passing the gas to the common outlet chamber c. The common inlet and outlet chambers b, c may be arranged in various ways. In the form shown, for use on the underside of four purifiers, these communicate through openings in the top of the valve casings g with the chambers k , l; the common inlet chamber b contains the tubular outlet chamber c, the main inlet and outlet f being adjacent, in the bottom of the apparatus. In another arrangement, the common chambers b, c are straight parallel channels, separated by a partition, special channels being provided connecting alternate chambers of the valve casings with the opposite common chambers ; the opposite valve casings at the ends of the apparatus are connected by transverse pipes. In an arrangement for use on the side of two purifiers, two casings containing pairs of valves are placed on opposite sides of a rectangular box, which is divided by a partition to form the common inlet and outlet chambers. Two similar arrangements may be used for a row of four purifiers, with two connecting-pipes, the common outlet chamber in each being an oblique pipe within a common inlet chamber.
