Resistance to propulsiun, reducing. - In ships provided with sets of longitudinal tubes of triangular cross-section disposed beneath the bottom and having orifices from which air or gas is ejected for propelling and steering, means are employed for directing the air or gas upwardly and rearwardly in the aft set of tubes and upwardly and forwardly in the forward set of tubes, also a multiway rotary valve is used for controlling the supply to the sets of tubes. The tubes are arranged in channels between three keels on a closed buoyant bottom chamber. The aft main tubes 10, Figs. 1 and 3, are arranged in recesses in a buoyant chamber 3 between keel members 4 - - 6 and are secured to headers 11 and take air under the control of a valve 20 from a reservoir 32 fed by an air compressor 31, minor forward tubes 19, 19 being controlled by the same valve 20. The tubes 10 are of wood or incorrodible material, the upper side 10', Figs. 4 and 5, being secured to the flat bottom of the vessel. The inclined sides 10 are provided with a staggered series of flared openings 13 near the bottom, there being grooves 15 between adjacent openings forming surfaces which direct the air upwardly and rearwardly. Each tube has a tubular casting 17 with a union 18. for attachment to the header, the casting having a hand hole for facilitating cleaning. The valve casting has outlets 21' - - 21 . Figs. 9 and 10, connected to the reservoir and headers and contains a conical valve 22 with cross passages formed by members 22 , 22 , 223, whereby on rotation of the hand wheel 26 the ship may be manoeuvred. The wheel has a pointer 25 which moves over an indicating scale on the dial 24. Specification 4231/06, and 2298/15, [Class 114, Ships &c., Propelling &c.], are referred to.

    • 183,970. Schroeder, R. W. May 27, 1921. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Measuring apparatus.-A meter for measuring the flow of fuel to an internal - combustion engine comprises a fitting 45, Fig. 4, with flow and return passages 50, 51, the passage 50 having a vertical slot communicating with the chamber inside a transparent cover 56. A piston 53 in the passage 50 is connected with a pointer co-operating with a scale adjacent to the slot. The meter is connected by pipes with the fuel-supply system, preferably under the control of a valve; it may be situated higher than the fuel tank, and may be completely filled by applying pressure to the liquid in the tank. Thereafter, it remains filled and the position of the piston 53 indicates the flow. Any gas or air tending to accumulate in the top of the meter casing is drawn off by the liquid passing out through the passage 51, this action being assisted by perforations 67 or by a tube 68, Fig. 9, with a flared portion 70.
