    • 168,462. Kelly, W. M. June 24, 1920. Printing-surfaces.-Relates to means for indicating and recording the quantities of articles of trade or business stock in hand at any time; a visible indication is also given when the quantity of any article in hand is below or above a certain amount. As shown in Fig. 1, a spider-frame 12 is revolubly mounted in the support 10, and carries in its arms a series of revoluble drums 14, each of which bears on its surface a series of descriptive representations of the various articles, and quantity-indicating means associated with each representation. Fig. 7 shows a fragmentary view of one of the drums. The type 19 on the left - show, and are adapted to print, the number and description of the various articles, the descriptive numbers 27 being repeated in upright characters 29 on the end disc 16 of the drum. The drum also bears a series of numerals 20 arranged in groups, comprising in each left-hand group the digits 1 - - 9, and in the remaining groups the digits 1, 2, 3 - - 8, 9, 0. Further type 28 may be employed for indicating the origin of the articles. The various groups of numerals are intended to indicate (from the right) the units, tens, hundreds, &c. of the particular article, and for this purpose an underscore 22 in association with each group is adapted to be moved into position to indicate the effective numeral of its series. It can also be moved clear to the left of its series, so as to indicate that the quantity of the article in stock is less than that represented by the numeral 1 of that series, for example, less than 10, 100, &c. The end disc 16 is revoluble with respect to the drum, and is formed with a groove in its edge through which the type can be inserted. As shown in Fig. 4, the type 20 are formed with lateral grooves which engage with the heads of L-shaped type-retaining members 18 fixed in the drums. The underscore 22, Fig. 5, which carries the indicator rule 25, is formed with flanges 23, 24, which engage the upper and lower edges of the type, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to centre and retain the underscore in proper position, it is provided with a spring catch 44, adapted to engage in one or other of a suitable series of notches 45 in the retaining members 18. The spider frame 12, Fig. 1, is adapted to be rotated to bring any desired drum into gear with a pinion 33 on the hand-driven spindle 32, the frame being secured in this position by the engagement of the pin 35 in the corresponding hole 36. To obtain a printed record of the indications on the drum, paper from the roll 37, and a sheet 38 of transfer material from the roller 46 geared to the spring drum, are threaded between the drum 14 and a platen roll on the spindle 32, and the drum is then rotated by the handle 34. When the print has been taken, it is cut off, by a knife 39, &c., and deposited in the tray 41, the transfer material being automatically rewound on its roller 46.

    • 565,827. Cylinder printing presses. KELLY, W. M. May 24, 1943, No. 8232. [Class 100 (ii)] A continuous revolution cylinder printing- press is constructed with bed-reciprocating gear comprising means for driving the bed at a constant speed during the central portions of each reciprocation comprising a pair of gears 45, 46 which are reciprocated by a cam 36 and lever 38 so that the gears respectively engage alternately with racks 47, 48 situated on either side of the central line of the bed, the gears 45, 46 being driven by gear-wheels 25, 29 of equal size which are rotated in opposite directions by gearing from a shaft 19 driven by a motor 20. Other racks 49, 50 are arranged at the ends of the bed along the central line and are engaged by gear sectors 53, 54, which are oscillated by pitmans 56, 57 connected to cranks on the driving-wheels 25, 29, to effect reversal of the bed at opposite ends of the stroke. The machine frame is constructed with outer frame members 11 and inner ones 16 in which are formed sliding bearings for the shaft of the wheels 47, 48. Some of the operating gears are mounted between the frames 16 and some between the frames 16, 11, and the whole is designed to be of simple construction so as to provide desirable spaces for other mechanism of the press. The bed moves on outer rollers 12, 13 and inner ones 18 supported by the frames 16, and the racks 47, 48 engage gibs 62 which guide the bed. Cushioning cylinders 60 are provided and the cylinder is driven by gear-wheels 31, 32, 34 from the shaft 30 of wheel 29, the wheels 31, 34, 29, 25 being of equal size. The gear 32 is mounted on a projecting stud 33 which is offset with respect to the centre of the shaft 30 and the axis of cylinder 15 so as to compensate for wear. The axis of the cylinder 15 is off-centred with respect to the axis of the gears 45, 46, so as to allow more space for inking and to permit full covering of the maximum formes.
