Packeting compressible materials in tins.-In a machine for packeting compressible materials, such as tobacco, the tins 2, Fig. 2, are fed from a disc 1 by a belt 4 into pockets 7 in a spider 6. Each pocket is arranged immediately below a compression chamber 13 on a rotary table 9 moving in synchronism with the spider 6. The upper portion of the compression chamber comprises a part 18, Figs. 2 and 3, fixed to the table 9, and radially movable walls 17. When a charge of tobacco is introduced through a feed shoot into the upper portion of the compression chamber, the wall 17 is retracted as shown in Fig. 2, and, on moving to the next station of rest, a fixed guide cam 23 forces the wall into the position shown in Fig. 3, effecting a preliminary compression. The upper edges of the chamber are flared outwards at. 16 so as to facilitate the introduction of the charge. Each wall 17 is connected by a link 20 to the one opposite, so that when compression takes place, the empty chamber opposite is expanded for the next cycle of operations. The bottom of the chamber 13 arrives over a fixed plate 15 and a. plunger 29 descends and compresses the charge into the chamber 13. At the next pause, a plunger 30 pushes the compressed charge out of the chamber 13 into the tin 2, the plate 15 having terminals between the points of operation of the plungers 29, 30. At the next stage, the tins are ejected from the machine on to a conveyer. The plungers may be of the metal known under the registered Trade Mark " Monel," and may be heated by electric or other means. Pads may be placed so as to clean the plungers. In another method of operation, the tin-feeding mechanism may be dispensed with and the compressed tobacco fed on to a belt ready to be placed in tins by hand.
