    • 1,108,501. Continuous casting. P. W. COLLINS. 7 May, 1965 [7 May, 1964], No. 19033/64. Heading B3F. A cast bronze or ferrous rod or tube is withdrawn continuously from a mould 12, e.g. of graphite, by rollers R at a constant speed on which continuously varying speed pulsations are imposed. The imposed speed rises from and returns to zero. The rollers R have cog wheels 16 on their axles driven by a chain 16a from a motor 25 and gearing 19. The latter may be controlled to produce cyclic increases in speed. Alternatively, the gearing may drive the chain 16a at constant speed but also drive, via further chains and wheels 21, 22, a wheel 20 which moves a wheel 18, mounted eccentrically of it and bearing on the chain 16a, to vary the effective length of the chain. In another alternative, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the gearing 19 rotates an eccentric (28) which translates a wheel (18), bearing on the chain, in a reciprocatory manner. The molten bronze is held in a crucible 10 in a furnace 11. There is a cooling sprayer 15 and a starter bar 24.

    • A process for distributing information and processing results for an airgun shooting sport with geographically diverse participants may include receiving registration data from a user, distributing course-of-fire data, and receiving a metric from the user. The course-of-fire data may define at least one parameter of a shooting sport match. The user may record an overall elapsed time associated with shooting targets specified in the course-of-fire data and send this score to a server. The server may rank order the scoring data, providing a benchmark for competition among the geographically diverse users. Furthermore, the server may distribute a rule-set to the user. The rule set may define the real-life, physical activity and the rule-set may require a standard item for participation. For example, the standard item may include the disclosed airgun target and/or airgun target stand.

    • 659,906. Firebridges. COLLINS, G. W., and COLLINS IMPROVED FIREBARS, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1949, No. 4041. [Class 51(i)] A firebridge for the furnace of a steam generator or boiler of the type which is movable across the grate bars to vary the grate area is provided with a trailing apron adapted to obturate exposed air slots in the grate bars. Each of two firebridge sections 11 comprises an iron or steel casting 16 formed at each end with webs 17 carrying a roller 20 and faced with ribbed heat resisting elements 35, and a trailing articulated apron 25 comprising flat platelike links 26 formed with interengaging knuckles 27 on their adjacent edges threaded by rods 24, said apron obturating exposed air slots in the grate bars 5 as the firebridge sections are moved forward by engaging a drawbar with loop members 38 on the front of each section. The articulated apron 25 collapses into a holder comprising a pair of bracket members 33 attached to the rear wall 7 of the ashpit and is formed with a weighting bar 32. The central firebar 5 is formed with an upwardly projecting guide rib 12 co-operating. with recesses formed in adjacent sides of: the. firebridge sections and.-formed with a stop, 13. Filler plates 39 disposedagainst the boiler sections 1 extend over substantiallythe full height of the firebridge and form a ribbed wall close to the firebridge over its extended length to prevent the escape of ashes and furnace gases therearound.

[Class 40 (iv).] A permanent magnet assembly for sound receivers or reproducers comprises a cylindrical magnet 5, preferably of cobalt or cobaltchrome steel, positioned within a mild steel or soft iron container 1 which is preferably cylindrical and is closed by end plates 2, 4. The walls of the container are positioned at such a distance from the magnet as to reduce magnetic leakage and to provide a return path for the magnetic flux. The container also acts as a shield for the magnet. As shown, the magnet is secured to the end plate 2 by a bolt 9 passing through the magnet and a mild steel or soft iron washer 11 into a mild steel or soft iron pole-piece 7 adapted to project into an aperture 6 in the end plate 4 to form an annular gap for the moving coil. The end plate 4 is provided with a number of tapped holes to enable the loudspeaker chassis to be secured thereto and the pole piece 7 is formed with a central tapped hole 13 to receive the usual centring screw carrying the spider secured to the cone. Instead of employing the bolt 9, the end plates, which may be dished, can be secured to the container by non-magnetic bolts passing through the container in the space between the magnet and the wall of the container and the end plate 2 and the magnet can be made integral.

    • 329,104. Brooks, J. G., Collins, C. W., and Collins, A. April 5, 1929. Road signals.-Colour signals at cross-roads with or without additional signs such as " stop," " care," " go," are automatically changed by a spring or weight motor through gearing timecontrolled by a member driven by a clookwork motor. The apparatus is contained in a standard a having four windows c - - - c at which are intermittently displayed the colour signals produced by lenses d - - d in a casing d containing an oil lamp being intermittently rotated by a shaft e. An amber lens with a red central spot may be followed in turn by a red lens, an amber lens with a green central spot, and finally a green lens. The " stop &c. signs are simultaneously rotated by a shaft h on the casing d. The shaft e is driven by a spring motor through gearing one member q of which has a peg adapted to arrest the rotation of the spindle l when obstructed by a lever n which is under the control of a cam plate r driven by a clockwork motor at a predetermined speed. The cam plate r rocks a lever p and with it a lever p , which rocks a lever n and with it the lever n out of the path of the peg q, causing at the same time a lever n to move clear of a slot n in a cam disc n on the spindle which can thereby rotate oneeighth of a circle, whereupon the pawl n enters. the next slot and the lever n moves into the path of the peg q, and stops the motor. By this arrangement the " caution " signals are automatically set for five seconds and the " stop " and " go " signals for forty seconds each. To enable the apparatus to be readily removed and replaced in the correct position the base b is provided with spaced dowel pins b entering recesses in a plate secured to the ground. Two or more such apparatus may work synchronously.
