    • 1,138,200. Sewing machines. WILLIAM BIRCH (ENGINEERS) Ltd. 25 July, 1967 [2 Sept., 1966], No. 39237/66. Heading D1G. In an overedge sewing machine a looper is mounted for reciprocating backwards and forwards movement in a looper frame which is pivotally mounted in a frame of the sewing machine and is driven with an oscillating motion to direct the looper alternately above and below the needle plate in its backwards and forwards movement. A lower shaft 10, which carries a pulley 15 coupled by a belt to a driving motor, is coupled by ratchet and pawl means to a feed wheel 55 carrying radial work-engaging spikes. Shaft 10 is coupled by a toothed belt 17 to an upper shaft 19 which carries at one end a handwheel 20 and at the other end a crank pin 26 engaged in a guideway 27 rigid with the needle bar 28 for reciprocating the latter. Shaft 19 is coupled by gears 34, 35 to a shaft 36 which is coupled by a toothed belt 43 to a shaft 45 journalled in a sub frame to provide for axial adjustment of shaft 45, the latter carrying a circular work-trimming blade 49. A presser bar 57 carries a presser foot 56 spring biased against feed wheel 55. A needle plate 58 has an L-shaped needle-passing slot 63 and a straight edge 64 adjacent feed wheel 55. The opposite edge has an initial portion 66 parallel with edge 64, a step 67 opposite the stitch-forming point, and a final inclined portion 68 adjoining the outlet of slot 63. A rectangular frame 71 has one side journalled on a horizontal stub shaft (72), and the other side journalled on a shaft 77 coupled by 2 to 1 gearing 84, 85 to shaft 10. A rod 70, slidably mounted in frame 71, carries a hooked looper 69 having a pivoted latch, and is rigid with a guideway 88 engaging a pin 87 on a disc 86 rigid with shaft 77. An extension 95 of frame 71 carries a pin 94 engaged in a cam groove formed in a disc 90 rigid with shaft 10. The two edges of two lengths of carpet to be united are placed one on top of the other and are trimmed in advance of the stitching point by the blade 49. When the needle descends through the work and commences to rise to throw a thread loop, frame 71 pivots downwardly and rod 70 advances to carry looper 69 through said loop. On retraction of rod 70, said loop is seized and extended by the hooked looper. When the needle rises, frame 71 pivots upwardly and rod 70 is advanced to project looper 69 above the work. The seized lower loop then moves along the looper stem. During the retraction of rod 70, the thread extending from the raised needle to the work is seized by the looper and extended as a loop which passes through the initially-seized loop as the latter is cast off the looper and over the edge of needle plate 59 at step 67. On the next advance of the lowered looper, the upper loop moves along the looper stem, and on retraction of the looper passes over the seized lower loop and is cast over the edge of needle plate 59. As stitching continues, the stitches pass along edge 68 for final release from slot 63. On completion of stitching, the carpet lengths are separated to form a flat seam as shown in Fig. 8. Depending on the amount of trimming, the sewn edges may either overlap, or abut or be separated from one another.

    • 286,450. Damsel, W. B. Feb. 28, 1927. Indicators, electric.-A fuel level indicator for use in a motor vehicle comprises a casing 2 having an integral wall 3 spaced from the back 4 in which is a socket 5 to receive an electric lamp 6 with a contact terminal 8 connected by a wire 9 to a battery. A switch unit has a flexible conductor C comprising a number of insulated wires 11 which are led to the indicator through the back 4 to a number of circularly arranged contact posts 12. A metal block 13 has a threaded extension and nut 15 which clamps the back 4 to the casing. To the front of the block 13 a. graduated disc 17 is secured by a screw together with a frame 18 which has bearings for a hand 20 pivoted to move over the disc. At the opposite end of the spindle 19 a contact finger 22 is provided which can be brought successively into engagement with the contacts 12. The spindle 19 is operated from a stem 27 through gearing 23, 24 and is normally rotated to the zero reading on the indicator by a spring 26. A glass dial 29 is provided over the disc 17. On rotating the stem 27 the lamp 6 will illuminate the dial when the hand 20 indicates the liquid level in the tank, and in addition the lamp lights automatically when the liquid level is low. The switch unit comprises a casing E, Fig. 7, mounted in the top of the tank, which is insulated and sealed against moisture. An insulating block 45 within the casing has a number of circularly arranged contact posts 44 which are connected by wires 11 to the posts 12 in the indicator. Depending from the casing E is a telescopic tubular support comprising sections 46, 47 which are held in longitudinal adjustment by a band 48. An axially rotatable shaft 51 carries a switch arm 52 which successively engages the posts 44, and at the lower end of this shaft a, guide 54 is provided in which a pivoted float arm 59 can move and translate its vertical movements into rotary movements of the shaft owing to the helical shape of the guide slot. The arm 52 is in consequence successively engaged with the contacts 44 and with the various circuits leading to the switch. When the liquid level in the tank recedes to a predetermined level, the arm 52 automatically completes a circuit and a constant warning is registered of the depleted state of the fuel tank.

Apparatus for sawing large sheets of material, such as plastic sheets, comprises a flat table or bed a on which a sheet can be placed to rest against a fence a 3 , a carriage b traversable on rails a 2 beneath the table and carrying a circular saw b 2 that protrudes through a slot in the table, and a guard and clamp member c that holds the sheet on the table while it is cut by traversing the carriage by means such as cable d on drums d 1 , the protruding portion of the saw being accommodated in a groove c 3 in the member c. At one end, the member c may be formed with a handle c 4 for pressing it down on the sheet and with a locating peg c 2 engaging a hole in the table while, at the other end, to allow easy detachment and to accommodate sheets of varying thickness, it may have either a bent plate c 1 held in an open slot in the fence by a spring-loaded plate a 5 or a hooked plate engaging under a spring-loaded cylindrical member on top of the fence. The saw is rotated by a motor b 1 on the carriage and one of the cable drums d 1 may be driven from a motor in the base of the table.
