Class 117 [Also in Group VIII] A machine for skiving shoe stiffener blanks (see Group VIII) comprises a holder H, Fig. 6, for a stack S of blanks at one side of the path of feed of the blanks, and separating means, including a gate 212, arranged to transfer the blanks one at a time to a support 16, from which they are then fed to the skiving knife. Each blank is fed from the holder H by reciprocating pushers 252 transversely across the machine on to the support 16. The holder H comprises a vertical wall 190 extending longitudinally of the machine on a flat guide plate 28 which is disposed at one side of the machine for adjustment transversely of the machine; bent rods 198, of which the one is adjustable lengthwise of the wall 190, serve to locate the stack of blanks in position. The gate 212, which is disposed with its enlarged lower end in a longitudinal gap 210 provided between the wall 190 and plate 28 is accommodated in a recess in the wall, being adjustable along the wall to a position midway between the rods 198 and heightwise to position its bottom edge only so far above the plate 28 as to permit the lowest blank in the stack to pass under it. The pushers 252 engage the outer side edge of the lowest blank and are mounted adjustably on a carriage 260 which is reciprocated transversely of the machine by pinions 274 engaging racks 270; the pinions 274 are driven from a vertical rack which is operated against an upwardly-acting spring by linkage from a driven cam, the working stroke being effected by the spring. The blank when pushed by the pushers drops off the plate 28 on to the table portion 16 and engages a guide wall 18 which is mounted for adjustment transversely of the machine by a screw 24; to ensure that the blank drops off the plate 28, a pivoted weight 310 engages the upper face of the blank and the pushers are arranged to travel over this face.
