    • 158,583. Gregory, G. W. July 17, 1918. Lathes.-In a lathe or like machine tool with an horizontal turret 2 carrying vertical work spindles 3 driven by loose spur-wheels 14 through clutches 17, except when these are released at one position of the spindles to stop them in succession for changing the work, through levers 16 and fixed cams 18, the gears 14 are driven through a ring 13 toothed internally and externally and rotated by pinions 12 on shafts 11 driven from a shaft 8 with a clutch connection 15 to provide means to equalize the drive, and a gear-box 7. The turret 2 is rotated through a. bell-crank lever 34 and links 35, a by a stop 33 on the oscillating cam-ring 32. The link a. also withdraws a sliding locking latch 20 first, to release the turret 2 at such time as it is to be rotated for indexing. The cam-ring 32 is operated through change-speed gears in the box 7, a shaft 43, a shaft 46, a second gear-box 50 with automatic and manually operated changespeed and reverse gearing 47 &c., and carries cams 56 engaging levers 58 to give the tool slides 57 their transverse motion, also further cams to operate the vertical tool slides 31. The carriers are balanced by weights 42 and chains 40.

    • 144,113. Gregory, G. W. June 25, 1919. Pocket, pen, and like knives; razors, safety. A holder, primarily intended for waste safety - razor blades to be used for sharpening pencils, comprises a blade-carrier b and a handle a arranged as an ordinary pocketknife, the carrier and handle having portions r which abut in the open position, and the carrier having indentations b , b which engage perforations in the blade and secure it in position. Coacting indentations a in the carrier and handle, which are in the form of U-shaped sheaths, secure the carrier in the open and closed positions. In a modification for taking non-perforated blades, the carrier is formed with a curled-in end or rollers at its forward edge for facilitating the entry of the blade, the end of which abuts against an indented stop at the rear end of the carrier. In a further modification, the carrier is permanently in alinement with the handle, the carrier and blade sliding into and out of the handle. A guard or comb may be slidably engaged with the carrier in its open position, so that the device may be used as a safety razor. The device may be used for stropping safety-razor blades.

    • 4601. Kendall & Gent, and Gregory, G. W. Feb. 29. Lathes ; tool - holders. -In roller steadies for taking the thrust on work in turret and other lathes due to the action of the tool, the rollers are carried by a pair of slides moving in circular grooves in the body, which also carries the tool. Projections D from the body are formed with circular grooves to guide the roller slides E, E which are retained by a collar F secured by a screw G and pin. The rollers L, L are mounted on pins M, M in the slides. The slides are connected by spring plungers S, S' to toothed segment rings moved in circular recesses by hand-operated worms O, which may be locked in position by nuts Q, Q . In order to move the slides rapidly when it is desired to leave an enlarged portion at the end of the work, the spring plungers, which have heads T, T' mounted in recesses in the slides so that the rollers may be brought close up to the work-holding chuck, are withdrawn from the segments and the slides are moved and then brought back until the plungers again snap in recesses in the segments. The tool 1 is adjusted for height by wedges 2 and secured by screw clamps 3, 3' in a holder C, which is adjusted by a rack and worm 6, the worm spindle 7 having a disk 10 in any position on which a stop-piece 11 may be secured by a screw 12. The position of the tool-holder is determined by the stop-piece being turned to abut against a hinged stop 13 on the body. Two stops may be used, and, according to the Provisional Specification, the stop 13 may have a fine adjustment screw. Rolling.-The rollers may also burnish the work.
