[Class 135] [Also in Group XXXVI] A cable system with viscous insulating material enclosed in a metal sheath has relief valves and feeding reservoirs connected to the interior of the cable at low and high points, respectively, of the installation to prevent local excessive pressure and to replenish loss of insulator. A suitable relief valve comprises a loaded valve 11 in a chamber 9 of a head 8 the upper part of which is filled with sealing material, a passage 7 leading to the interior of the cable 2 and an outlet passage 14, 12 leading to a moisture-excluding seal, such as a lightly loaded valve 16 delivering to a basin 30 beneath a bell 25.

In a modification the tubes are formed with corresponding tapering ends to fit one within the other.

[Class 83 (iv)] A tool for jointing, particularly for joining two stranded conductors by means of a connecting sleeve, comprises a body 2 having a slot 19 that permits it to be passed laterally over the conductors, and a bore 20 to receive a two part liner 3 itself bored to be a close fit on the sleeve 5 that surrounds the strands 8 to be joined. Flanges 15 with flats 16 are received in a transverse groove in the body and serve to locate the parts so that punches 6 guided in holes in the body by bushes 13 and holes in shoulders 21 are in line with holes in the liner. The parts may be clamped in this position by a set screw 18. Heads 7 on the punches are struck by a hammer to form connecting dimples. Preferably two dimples are made in the sleeve on each side of the joint, the punches being located at 120 degrees apart in staggered pairs. Pins 14 in the punches prevent their complete withdrawal. According to the Provisional Specification the pins may be secured on the body and pass through slots in the punches which may carry springs between them to the inoperative position. The punches may also be in two parts one part being in the outer body and the other in the liner.

[Class 38 (i).] A terminal 13 mounted on an insulator 2 filled with oil is provided with an expansion chamber 15 in the form of a cap or dome 1 with a liquid seal 10 for the joints between it and the insulator. The cable end is attached to an inner member 12 secured to the frame 3 that supports the terminal and is perforated at 14. The cap 1 may be of glass or metal. A filling aperture may be provided in the cap, if that is not removable. A flexible connection between the end of the cable and the frame 3 may be provided. Electrostatic shields and rings may be mounted on the cable sheath and around the top and base of the insulator. A liquid seal may also be provided at the lower end of the insulator.

Cable joints.-Relates to means of the expanding bellows type, applicable to electric cable joints and dividing boxes, for maintaining an enclosure full of a liquid or -semi-liquid under pressure whilst allowing for expansion of the enclosed material. According to the invention, the bellows reservoir 1 is disposed in a gas-tight casing 16 charged with air under pressure, the casing consisting of two main parts, viz., a base plate 3 and a shell 16 joined together, as shown, with a packing-washer 14 and an oil seal at a. A device for indicating the degree of expansion of the reservoir consists of a gauge glass or the like 34, with protecting casing 37, -carried by the base plate 3, as shown, and an in- - dicator body or float 33 connected by a rod 32 to the upper end 7 of the bellows device 1. A cylin- - drical member 11, adapted to coact with a packing washer 10 on the under side of the bellows top, limits, the contraction of the bellows, and prevents escape of oil in the event of the gaugeglass 34 breaking.

[Class 38 (i)] An insulating tube 6 surrounding a cable joint and overlapping the ends 4 of the insulation of the cables, is spaced therefrom by hollow insulating members 7 abutting on the cable insulation and secured in place by insulating tape, cord, &c. 9 passed round the cable insulation 4, through the members 7 and through holes 8 in the tube 6. Two members 7 located at right angles may be used, the tape &c. 9 being passed under and over the cable end and then over the edge of the tube 6 to form a second bight under the cable as shown in dotted lines. The tube 6 may be formed by wrapping pasted paper on a mandrel and the members 7 may be made similarly. The tube 6 may be mounted at an inclination to the cable axis so as to allow free escape of air when the surrounding casing is filled with compound.
