    • A process for the combustion of a fuel with an oxygen-containing gas, such as air, comprises passing at least part of the fuel/oxygen-containing gas mixture, at an elevated feed temperature, through a first combustion catalyst containing palladium monoxide and/or cobalto-cobaltic oxide and therein effecting partial combustion of said combustible mixture to give a hot partially combusted mixture and then passing said hot partially combusted mixture, together with the remainder, if any, of said fuel/oxygen-containing gas mixture, through a second combustion catalyst that is essentially free from elements, or compounds thereof, of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, and which is an intimate mixture of oxides of at least two elements selected from Groups IIIa and IVa of the Periodic Table, at least one of which oxides is oxygen-deficient.

    • A system and method for storage and preservation of an article. The system comprises a body (10) defining a zone (14) adapted to receive an article (18), isolating it from an external atmosphere, and a provision for modifying an internal atmosphere contained within the zone (20). The body (10) may be configured as a bag (12) having the walls formed of plastics material containing embedded particles for the removal of selected elements or compounds from the internal atmosphere within the zone (14) and disallows the permeation of undesirable elements or compounds found within the external atmosphere into the zone (14). The bag (12) has an opening (16) for insertion and removal of the article (18) in addition to the insertion and removal of the provision for modifying an internal atmosphere contained within the zone (20). After the modification of the internal atmosphere in the zone (14), the bag (12) is sealed with the articles (18) being stored within the zone (14) in an atmosphere which does not chemically react with the stored articles (18) thereby storing and preserving the articles (18).
