[Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a cross-head drive of the pin-and-slot type, a reciprocating cross-head 5 has an endless groove 10 comprising inner and outer walls engaging with opposite sides of a crank-pin 6 fixedly secured to a rotatable member, said endless groove comprising a number of symmetrically arranged cam-like parts having a. configuration such that thrust is exerted between the pin and the cross-head during substantially the whole time the cross-head is moving, the thrust being exerted during alternate halves of each stroke between the pin and the inner and outer walls of the groove respectively. The groove is substantially rhombic-shaped comprising arcuate sides 10a and arcuate corners 10b joined by inwardly-bowed parts 10c. The crankpin follows a circular track 6a, is fixed directly to a driving wheel rotating on axis 12, and is fitted with a replaceable sleeve to correct for wear. The centre of the cross-head is hollowed out as at 13, and the outer walls 11 are relatively thin, the cross-head being made from two interconnected inner and outer parts which are reversible and adjustable for wear . The crosshead may be enclosed by a casing to exclude dust, and twin coupling rods 3,3, 8,8 may be employed.

    • 534,360. Valves and valve gear. TAYLOR T. Feb. 5, 1940, No. 2217. [Class 7 (vi)] A sleeve valve 11 is reciprocated in the cylinder head so as to control inlet and exhaust ports 18, 19 respectively, by means of a rotating cylinder liner 1 provided with pins 27 engaging an undulating groove 28 in the valve, rotation of the valve being prevented by pins 29 sliding in grooves 30. The valve is formed with inner and outer portions 11a, 116 arranged to slide over the inner and outer faces of the liner, and the inlet at 18 passes through the annular space formed between the portions 11a and 11b and under the lower end of the inner portion 11a, while exhaust occurs through ports 25 in the inner portion 11a and through the ports 19. The valve may be moved intermittently, so as to give quick opening and closing of the ports and remain stationary between, either by irregular formation of the cam groove 28, or by intermittent rotation of the liner caused by , constructing the worm 9 driving the same with threads of varying pitch.
