    • A flowmeter (10) has a variable area, vertically-oriented duct (35) through which flows fluid whose flow rate is to be determined. A float (30) in the duct (35) assumes a position in the duct (35) that depends on the flow rate of fluid in the duct. A window (52) is located at an end of the duct (35) in alignment with a longitudinal axis of the duct. A transducer unit (50) projects a signal beam comprising either light in the ultraviolet, visible, or infrared spectrum, or ultrasound energy. The signal beam propagates in a beam through the window (52) and along the axis toward the float (30). The transducer (50) includes a sensor (60) that detects the signal energy returned by the float (30) by reflection or some other mechanism to the transducer unit (50). The intensity or delay time in the returned signal energy indicates the position of the float (30) in the duct (35), from which the fluid flow rate may be determined.
