    • 249,109. Silica Gel Corporation, (Assignees of Miller, E. B., and Edel, W. L.). March 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Refrigerating, vacuum systems for. - In systems wherein the vapour of a liquid such as brine or water is adsorbed by a porous solid adsorbent such as silica gel, activated charcoal, or gels of oxide of tin &c., as set forth in Specifications 225,191 and 228,136. the vapour is rejected from the adsorbent to the atmosphere during the reactivation of the adsorbent, the process involving alternate adsorption and reactivation being effected without the use of a condenser or pumps. The apparatus comprises a vessel 10, in which the refrigerant liquid is deprived of contained air by heating, a stop valve 13, a cold evaporator 11, a check valve 14, an adsorber 12 and heater 16, and a vent valve 15. The system is first freed of contained air by applying heat to the evaporator 11, the valve 13 being closed, the vapour ultimately escaping through the valve 15. Heat is then applied to the adsorbent to free it of adsorbed vapour, which escapes through the valve 15, after which the adsorber is allowed to cool, the valve 15 closing. When the evaporator 11 is put into refrigerating use the vapour given off passes through the valve 14 and is adsorbed. At the end of the refrigerating period the heater 16 is applied to reactivate the adsorbent, the valve 14 closing against the return of vapour to the evaporator and the vapour being rejected to atmosphere through the valve 15. The valves 14, 15 may be manually controlled, or these valves and the heater 16 may be operated by thermostatic means. The evaporator may be replenished occasionally by opening the valve 13.
