[Class 96.] Clean paper pulp is recovered from old printed paper by a cold process by treating with causticizing sludge, obtained as a waste product in the causticizing of soda, the pulp then being washed ; carnallite waste iquors may be added to the causticizing sludge, and the causticizing sludge or the carnallite liquor may be prepared from its constituents. The sludge may be obtained in the causticizing of pure sodium carbonate or in the causticizing of the residue obtained by evaporating and igniting the boiling liquors used in the manufacture of soda pulp or sulphate pulp. When carnallite waste liquor is added, magnesium hydroxide is formed, the colloidal nature of which assists removal of the printer's ink. In an example, 1000 kg. of old printed paper is disintegrated in a Hollander and 300-500 litres causticizing sludge added. After 1-2 hours the pulp is washed, preferably by means of a washing drum which revolves in the pulp and is covered with a fine sieve.

Catches, automatic. - Relates to a fastening for casement windows, doors, ventilating flaps, and the like, in which a roller or ball is so arranged in an inclined guide as to allow closure of the casement but prevent opening of same until said roller is retracted by means of a pivoted lever, and consists in suspending the roller or ball over the edge of the casement or the like, the lever being trunnioned between brackets on the casement, so that its upper end retracts the roller when its lower end is pulled to open the casement. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the roller a is held by trunnions b in oblique slots d in brackets c on the window frame, the lever e being trunnioned between brackets f on the casement. In a further construction, the roller a is replaced by a ball guided in a casing on the window frame, and a plate may be connected to the casement for cooperating with the ball.

The following may be treated: (1) unfermented wort and green beer, (2) undistilled spirit and rectified spirit before or after dilution with water, (3) whiskey base, (4) a distillation product of molasses and ethyl alcohol utilized in the production of rum and (5) must and fermented wine before or after any initial ageing and racking.
