    • An electrochemical cell, having a metal halide couple, comprises an electrode structure in which the metal of the couple is deposited during charging of the cell and a counterelectrode structure at which halide is generated during charging of the cell. The metal halide may be zinc bromide or zinc iodide. A microporous separator is positioned between the electrode and the counterelectrode. The cell has an aqueous electrolyte comprising a metal halide, the metal of the halide being the same as the metal of the couple. The electrolyte also includes a water soluble agent capable of assisting in the ionic conductivity of the cell and an additive capable of complexing the halide to form an immiscible halide complex during the charging of the cell. The additive is derived from plant extracts and may be grape juice, blackcurrent juice, green tea extract, black tea extract or red wine. A method of enhancing complexing of bromine or iodine in a zinc bromine or zinc iodine cell comprises adding an additive to the electrolyte which is capable of forming a water immiscible complex with bromine or iodine and is derived from plant extracts high in polyphenols.

    • An elongated flat battery having a series of connected cells that are formed from a lamination of elongated tapes /layers. The lamination is formed from two sets of laminating tapes each comprising a carrier tape 1 bonded to a narrower electrode tape 2 which is covered by an elongated separator/spacer 6 that is narrower than and bonded to the carrier tape; wherein the laminated tapes have slots punched through the tapes that separate the electrode tape into plates, and allow electrolyte to be introduced into the cells, as an alternative to the use of a specific conduit. The spacers of two sets of laminated tapes are placed together, wherein the slots are offset from each other, and the carrier tapes are bonded together to form the elongated battery. A sealing plug 7 seals the slots isolating the cells electrolyte and/or gases. The spacer is preferably non-electrically conductive and act as fluid reservoirs e.g. cellulose, absorbent ceramics, fumed silicas; and may be a reservoir for the electrolyte. Electrode tape is preferably electrically conductive e.g. prolytic graphite, carbon, aluminium, zinc, gold; and preferably coated with electrochemically active materials. Carrier tape is preferably non-conductive, non-reactive and non-pervious to the electrolyte e.g. polyimide, polyethylene.

    • 1,186,851. Flexible tubes. R. M. JOHNSON. 21 April, 1967 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 2835/66. Heading F2P. [Also in Division A1] In order to prevent the fouling of ledges, e.g. of window sills, lintels, cornices &c. on buildings, at least one collapsible tube of flexible material e.g. polythene, is secured to the ledge, one end of each tube having an inlet aperture connected to a source capable of supplying pulses of compressed air, or gas, and a restricted outlet being located at, or adjacent, the other end. A tube may be secured to a ledge of wood, or concrete, by nails passed through it adjacent one side remote from the outer edge of the ledge, alternatively eyelets may be provided along one side of the tube for fastening to pins, or hooks, mounted upon a ledge. A tube, or each of a plurality of tubes, may be connected to a pulse delivering air- or gas-compressor, or to a compressor through a pulse-producing valve, either of which arrangements may be controlled by an adjustable timing device. Alternatively, or additionally, a compressor may be controlled by a pressure-sensitive switch operable by the weight of a number of birds settling upon the tube or tubes. As shown, each of the tubes C has a restricted outlet D the tubes being connected to sub-headers E or to a header H which communicates with a pressure-sensitive switch valve B leading to a compressor A.
