    • 965,396. Chain lubrication. R. L. BATCHELOR. May 24, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962], No. 20853/63. Heading B8A. [Also in Division F2] In a lubricating system for a conveyer chain, pressurized soap solution and pressurized gas are supplied, a foaming unit and a control unit are provided, and foam is conveyed from the foaming unit to the chain. In an embodiment, pressurized soap solution is supplied from a tank 45 to a solenoid valve 55 via a pipe 43 and pressurized air is supplied to a solenoid valve 53 via a pipe 41. The solenoid valves are actuated intermittently and alternately by a control unit comprising an electric timer 49 and an electrical service connection 51. The solenoid valve 55 is connected via a pipe 59, a needle-valve 61, a check-valve 63, and a pipe 65, to the base of a foaming unit 57, whereas the solenoid valve 53 is connected via a pipe 67, a needle-valve 69, a check-valve 71, a pipe 73 and the pipe 65 to said base of the unit 57. The unit 57 contains beads which facilitate the formation of fine foam which is conveyed, via a pipe 35, to a lubricating unit 27 having a nipple 33 thereon leading to a chamber 29 therein. A conveyer chain 1 is passed through the chamber 29 and foam is collected by the top portions 9 of the chain and is carried to the parts which are to be lubricated. The portions 9 may serve as a slide-valve by alternately covering and uncovering the outlet of the nipple 33.

    • 562,336. Excavating. McFARLANE, A. B., and LOWE, R. Nov. 23, 1942, Nos. 16539/42 and 10782/43. [Class 68 (i)] An earth - moving machine comprises a wheeled bucket with a scraper blade at its lower front edge, a movable front apron, and a tailgate which is advanced to eject the spoil, means being provided automatically to return the tailgate and such means being arranged so as to leave the top of the bucket free, and so connected to the tail-gate as to compensate the movement produced by the resistance of the spoil on the tail-gate. In Figs. 1 and 3, the bucket 2 is fixed to a rigid yoke 5 carried by a steerable front carriage 8 and is pivoted at 19 to arms 17 supported by rear wheels 15 ; a cable 20, passing over sheaves and guides 21 ... 25, controls lifting and lowering of the bucket. The bucket floor may have a wood filling reinforced by webs, the scraper blade 30 may be stepped or curved, and the bucket sides may carry scarifying teeth and side cutting blades. The front apron 12 is pivoted at 32 and the sheet-metal tail-gate 40 is mounted on a transom 41 carried by carriages 42, 43, supported by rollers 38, 45, 47 on guides on the sides of the bucket. A cable 11 passes by sheaves 10, 50, 10, 14, 51, 52, 53 to a spool 49 for spare cable, hauling on the cable 11 first lifting the front apron and then advancing the tail-gate ; during the advance of the tail-gate, cables 60, 61, connected to upstanding arms 64 on the ends of the transom, compress springs 58 in oppositely inclined tubular transverse casings 56, 57 on the bucket, the springs acting through the arms 64 to compensate for the turning moment produced by the spoil on the tail-gate, and returning the tail-gate on release of the cable 11. Before the cables 60, 61 are connected to the arms 64, the springs 56 are initially compressed by screw adjusting means 67 or by telescoping ends threaded &c. to the casings 56, 57. In Fig. 4, return of the tail-gate is effected by springs 58 in casings 70, 71 above the top side edges of the bucket, the springs acting through push-rods 72 and being preloaded by screw adjusters 67 or telescoping members. The springs may be replaced by fluid pressure cylinders or other recoil mechanism.

    • A paving system comprises an upper paving layer (1) permeable to liquid, and a substrate layer (7) of load bearing particulate material. Particles (10) of a non-load bearing, non-degradable porous foamed polymeric material are distributed in the interstitial spaces between particles (9) of the load bearing particulate material. The porous material may be an open celled phenolyic foam such as foamed phenol formaldehyde resin. The porous material absorbs water and also serves to retain microorganisms to break down pollutants. The system can be in fluid communication with the surrounding soil. Elements of the porous material may be used in lumps, which crumble under load into particles, which settle into the substrate layer.
