    • A silo through which alkali cellulose may be continuously passed from top to bottom for the continuous ripening of the alkali cellulose comprises charging means characterized by a distributer from which the alkali cellulose is dispensed in the form of a falling stream reciprocating horizontally across the silo and discharging means incorporating provision for weighing the emerging material. The distributer consists of a wheeled carriage 5 on which is mounted a driven endless chain 48, Fig. 10, carrying a rod 50 which projects laterally from the chain and is confined to movement in a fixed vertical guideway 51 so that on rotation of the chain the carriage reciprocates across the top of the silo. The carriage supports an endless belt 2 which receives the material from a hopper 1 and discharges it on to a pair of laterally feeding screws 3, Fig. 2, also supported by the carriage so that the material from the belt 2 is spread out to fall in a sheet which extends over the width of the silo and moves back and forth along its length. The material eventually emerges between rollers 6 which, as shown in Fig. 5, have longitudinal ribs 16 for co-operation with fixed scrapers 15, each roller being driven in the opposite direction to its neighbours. From the rollers the material falls on to a conveyer belt 7 whose upper run forms the base of the weighing receptacle 8 of a balance which is used to control drive means for the rollers 6 and belt 7. Specifications 672,302, 786,808 and 848,772 are referred to.

    • 254,567. King, R. Oct. 5, 1925. Rollers and roller heads. - In an arrangement for applying or releasing the pressure on the top drawing roller in a spreader, drawing, and roving frame or like machine, an operating lever 19, Fig. 1, which is moved into or out of contact with the bush 18 of the roller spindle 11, is mounted on strap 14. The strap is, by the operation of the device, constrained to move in a rectilineal path. The strap is provided with a block 23, which bears against the bush 11, and is provided at its upper end with a vertical face 24, against which the roller 21 rests when in its weighting position. The lever 19 may be provided with a camshaped end in place of the roller 21. The strap 14, Fig. 4, may be provided with a guiding link 26 which engages the spindle 11 directly or carries a half bush 18. The roller 21 on the cam on the lever 19 is moved into and out of contact with the link. The strap 14 is constrained by the link 26 to move in a rectilineal path. The operating lever 19, Fig. 7, may be mounted on the link 26 and carry a roller 21 adapted to contact with the inner curved surface of the strap 14.

    • 12,023. Cotton & Co., S., Cotton, C. C., Kennedy, H. C., and King, R. May 23. Heckling-machines.- Relates to apparatus for lowering the strick of flax &c. from the cross channel of the heckling-machine to the sheets of a dressing or finishing - machine arranged contiguous thereto, and again raising the strick after it has been dressed. The holders B, after transference from the main channel of the machine to the crosschannel A by mechanism such as described in Specifications 16,010/01, 19,583/07, 26,557/07, 3998/08, 10,459/11, and 29,815/12, are unclamped, the ends of the strick are pulled through by changing-apparatus D, D such as decribed in Specification 16,010/01, and the holders are re-clamped and passed on to a loose or movable piece or box bracket A fitted in a gap of the cross-channel. The piece A is carried by a cranked lever E' pivoted in a lever E pivoted at e, Fig. 2, and operated by a cam F through a lever G and link g , to lower and raise the holder and strick between the sheets of the dressing-machine k; the lever E is counter-weighted and is guided by fixed bars H with a stop bar h. The arm E of the lever E is forked to engage a fixed runner e , so as to turn the holder from the horizontal to the vertical position and vice versa in its downward and upward movements. A lug e on the lever E is adapted to co-operate with a stop e on the lever E to limit the downward rotary movement of the lever E'. The holder is held in the piece A by a bracket a fixed to the back of the lever E and provided with a lip a under which the holder slides. The apparatus may be mounted as a separate machine or upon the framing of the dressing- machine.

    • 580,104. Sorting laundry &c. articles. ROSS, R. K. and JENNER, Ltd., A. & C. March 22, 1944, No. 5319. [Class 117] Apparatus for sorting articles for treatment in laundries, dyeing, dry-cleaning and like establishments comprise sorting booths 9, Fig. 5, with openings 11 for different classes of articles, each connected by a shoot to separate receptacles on a lower floor or level. The booths 9 have bins 13, 14 for small and large articles, shelves 15 to facilitate sorting and checking, and a table 14A to support a marking machine. The receptacles 6, Fig. 3, are each divided into superposed sections by doors 17, 18 the lowest section being controlled by doors 16, so that successive batches or journeys can be accumulated and conveyed to the wash houses &c. in turn, by trolleys wheeled under the receptacle supporting floor 8. The sorting booths may be arranged to radiate from a central platform, Fig. 2 (not shown) and the receptacles may be in the form of a hexagonal container divided into receptacles by radial and circumferential partitions, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively a rectangular arrangement of the sorting booths and receptacles may be used.
