    • Methacrylates containing fluorine are prepared by reacting methacrylic acid, anhydride, acid chloride or methyl ester, with a primary or secondary saturated alcohol which contains 2, 3 or 4 carbons, one hydroxyl group and at last one fluorine atom not attached to the same carbon atom as the hydroxyl group and no other substituents, preferably in the presence of a strong acid and also a substance which inhibits polymerization such as pyrogallol, hydroquinone or tannic acid. The water, hydrogen chloride or methyl alcohol formed during the reaction may be removed, for example, by evaporation. The products of the invention may be polymerized alone or with other polymerizable materials, dyes, plasticisers or polymerization inhibitors. In the examples: (1) 2 : 2 : 2-trifluoroisopropanol, methacrylyl chloride and hydroquinone are reacted together to give trifluoroisopropyl methacrylate which is polymerized by means of heat in the presence of benzoyl peroxide; (2) trifluoroethyl methacrylate is prepared from 2 : 2 : 2-trifluoroethanol, methacrylyl chloride and pyrogallol and is polymerized as in (1); (3) fluoroethyl methacrylate is prepared from monofluoroethanol, methacrylyl chloride and pyrogallol and polymerized as above. The preferred polymerization catalysts are lauryl-, succinic-, benzoyl-, ethylhydrogen-, acetone- or diethylperoxides, benzoin, diacetyl or uranyl acetate and nitrate.

Printing - surfaces; type-bars. - A device for use in association with perforating-rules 8 in platen printing or embossing machines, and adapted to engage the sheet of paper to be perforated, comprises a rule or strip 1, 2 adapted to be set in a forme parallel to the perforating - rule and having its bearing surface resiliently supported at a height not less than the height of the cutting edge of the rule. The device consists of two pieces 1, 2 forced apart by a spring 5, disconnection being prevented by the engagement of lugs 6, 7 on the two parts. The perforating- rule 8 is set up between two of the devices 1, 2, Fig. 7, which may be separated from the adjacent type 10 in the forme by brass or other metal plates 9. The surface of the part 1, being normally above the cutting edge of the perforator, engages and holds the sheet of paper before and during the perforating, and also prevents the inking-roller from contacting with the perforator. The part 1 is made of slightly less thickness and length than the part 2 so that it can move freelv in the forme. The devices may be made of standard lengths so that multiples may be used if required. The face of the part 1 may be formed so as to print a line of dashes.
