    • 973,673. Camera exposure control. R. EDWARDS. July 30, 1962, No. 29211/62. Heading G2A. In a camera, movement of a member in the direction to cock the shutter is adapted, before the shutter operation takes place, to clamp a movable stop, positionally controlled by the light meter, in the position significant of the light intensity, and to provide the drive for adjusting the diaphragm to a setting determined by the position in which the movable stop is clamped. As shown, the shutter 15 is linked at 37 to a shaft 31, rotation of which by a lever 30 across to operate the shutter. Before such operation is effected, rotation of shaft 31 causes, through resilient link 32, a clamp 48 to engage a disc 47 on the shaft 45 of a photo-electric exposure meter so that a stop 46, in the form of a counter-balanced disc, is held in a position corresponding to the ambient light intensity. Rotation of shaft 31 also causes, through a shipping clutch 34, 36, movement of diaphragm control ring 24 and of a disc 50 carrying a lug 51. Ring 24 is adjusted until lug 51 contacts the clamped stop 46 whereby the aperture is set in rundown with the lighting conditions. Further movement of shaft 31 operates shutter 15. A shutter speed control may be incorporated to vary the initial relative setting of the diaphragm control.

    • 713,686. Power operated controls for aircraft. VICKERS-ARMSTRONG, Ltd., and EDWARDS, C. R. R. Dec. 17, 1952 [Jan. 31, 1952], No. 2650/52. Class 4 An aircraft has, in combination with a power operated control surface, a device for measuring the hinge moment of the control surface. The surface 10 carries an arm 11 coupled to a known type of hydraulic servomotor 13 wherein the cylinder 17 is connected on opposite sides of the piston 20 to tubes 21, 22. These tubes are connected by adapters 27, 28 to an indicator unit 19 comprising a body 38 housing two metal bellows 25, 26 within which are spring loaded rods 45, 46 each attached to a valve member 34 having opposed faces. The upper face is urged by a spring 33 against a seating 31 and the lower face engages another seating when the bellows has been moved a predetermined distance. The upper end of the rod 46 is pivoted at 47 to a short lever 40 pivoted at its other end 48 to the operating rod 39 of a " Desyn" (Registered Trade Mark) transmitter 23 which is connected to a visual indicator 24. Other links 49, 50 ensure a parallel linkage and the rod 40 is further pivoted at its mid point 41 to a. pair of spaced levers 42 pivoted at one end to a fixed fulcrum pin 43 and at the other end to the rod 45. Differential pressures in the tubes 21, 22 resulting from unbalanced aerodynamic loads acting.on the surface 10 will cause either the rod 46 to rise and rock the lever 40 about the pivot 41 to lower the rod 39 or the rod 45 to rise and rock the levers 42 about the fulcrum 43 to raise the rod 39. The resulting signal from transmitter 23 will move the pointer of instrument 24 to a position that indicates the hinge moment on the surface 10. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the movable element of the instrument 24 is used to actuate micro-switches that control an actuator mounted in the control surface and coupled to a trimming tab which is moved to a position in which the hinge moment on the control surface 10 becomes a minimum whereby the pilot may revert from powered to manual control without risk.

    • 626,441. Sanitary closets. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and EDWARDS, C. R. R. Aug. 28, 1947, No. 23859. [Class 26] [Also in Group XXVI] In a chemical closet provided with a receptacle comprising an antiseptic digestant or other liquid, a pump submerged in the liquid receptacle 10 and a delivery duct 29 leading from the pump to a flushing gallery 17, the pump comprises a casing 19 having a hole 27 for the entry of liquid covered by a grating 34 to keep out solid matter, a paddle-blade 20 mounted to oscillate radially fixed to a vertical spindle 21. Said spindle 21 carries dogs 23 engaged by the socketed extremity 24 of a tubular part 25 provided with a handle 26. The paddleblade 20 is slightly less in depth than the vertical cross-section of the casing 19, and a resilient strip 31, e.g. of rubber, is. attached to the pressure side of said blade, so that the edges 32 of said strip co-operate with the inner walls of the casing 19 to seal the paddle therein on the flushing stroke, whilst being capable of flexing to permit the flushing liquid to flow past the blade 20 on the return stroke. A spring- loaded plug 33 is provided to empty the receptacle. By means of a connection for a hose the receptacle 10 may be flushed out. The pan 13 is closed at the bottom by a flap 14 pivoted at 15 and provided with a counter-weight 16.
