    • Weighted random scheduling is preformed, which may be particularly applicable to packet switching systems. For each particular input of multiple switch inputs, a request to send a packet to one of the outputs of the switch is generated by weighted randomly selecting one of the outputs to which the particular input has one or more packets to send. One of the requests is granted for each different one of the outputs for which one or more requests were generated. Packets are sent between the inputs and the output corresponding to the granted requests. The weighted random selection is typically weighted based on the number of packets or bytes to send to each of the outputs by a corresponding input of the inputs, the last times packets were sent from a corresponding input of the inputs to each of the outputs, and/ classes of service associated with packets to send to each of the outputs by a corresponding input of the inputs.

    • Methods and apparatus are disclosed for performing lookup operations using associative memories, including, but not limited to modifying search keys within an associative memory based on modification mappings, forcing a no-hit condition in response to a highest-priority matching entry including a force no-hit indication, selecting among various sets or banks of associative memory entries in determining a lookup result, and detecting and propagating error conditions. In one implementation, each block retrieves a modification mapping from a local memory and modifies a received search key based on the mapping and received modification data. In one implementation, each of the associative memory entries includes a field for indicating that a successful match on the entry should or should not force a no-hit result. In one implementation, an indication of which associative memory blocks or sets of entries to use in a particular lookup operation is retrieved from a memory.

    • 21,829. Campbell, R. B. Oct. 26. Sleepers. - Concrete, cement, and like sleepers, strengthened by one or more metal cores embedded in the material, have the rails bolted to metal covering- plates secured to wider portions of the sleeper by plain or corrugated transverse U-shaped supports embedded in the concrete and arranged with their open ends facing the ends of the sleeper. Figs. 1 and 2 show one of the transverse U-shaped plates 18, which has portions of its sides and base inwardly bent at 22 to secure it firmly to the concrete, Fingers 19 on the plate 18 are bent alternately in opposite directions to secure the covering-plate 20 in position upon the wider portion 17 of the sleeper. The rail rests on a block of wood; lead, or other material fitted between the flanges 21 of the covering-plate, and may be secured in position by clips bolted to the covering - plate through holes 25. Holes 36 are also provided in the covering-plate to secure chairs thereto, when the latter are used to hold the rails. A modified form of support is cast integral with the covering-plate and provided with additional openings on its top surface to admit the concrete. The central portion of the under surface of the sleeper between the rails may be bevelled more than the end portions.
