    • A reactor for generating combustible fuel gases comprising a chamber, an inclined grate extending from adjacent the top of the chamber to near the bottom and sloping forwardly within the chamber from the top to the bottom, said grate dividing the chamber into a primary chamber at the forward side of the grate and an antechamber at the rear side, a conveyor for delivering a solid fuel such as wood chips and other chopped-up woody material to the upper end of the grate at a rate to maintain a continuous bed of fuel from top to bottom, a blower for delivering primary air to a plenum chamber at the downwardly facing side of the grate to sustain combustion of the fuel at the lower end of the bed and to generate sufficient heat above the place of combustion to effect destructive distillation of a portion of the fuel in the bed above the place of combustion said primary air at said place of combustion converting the charcoal remaining after distillates have passed off descending from the place of distillation to CO and ash, an ash pit at the lower end of the grate for receiving the ash, a conveyor situated in the ash pit for removal of the ash to make room for descent of the fuel from above and a port in the forward wall of the mixing chamber at the downwardly facing side of the grate thru which the mixed distillate and CO are removed.

    • 597,024. Hydraulic door-checks. ADAMS (VICTOR), Ltd., R., and WEBB, C. Sept. 6, 1945, No. 23007. [Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] A hydraulic door check, comprising a cylinder 1 accommodating a piston 2 and a pistonrod 2a and having a stuffing-box 9, is characterised in that the cylinder is formed with a lengthwise disposed bore connecting the interior of one end of the cylinder with the interior of the other end of the cylinder via a valve 3 which provides a check in the flow of oil in one direction and allows an easy flow in the other direction, and with another lengthwise disposed bore open to the interior of the cylinder at the stuffing-box end and closed at its other end to accommodate the oil displaced by the piston-rod. As shown, the cylinder, which is square in external cross-section, is provided with an attachment lug 10 and is formed with four bores at corner portions of the cylinder body. All the bores are plugged at their outer ends and communicate with the interior of the cylinder near the stuffing-box end through inclined bores 11. The upper bores 4 and 5 have closed inner ends while the lower bores 6 and 7 communicate with the inner end of the interior of the cvlinder via vertical extensions communicating with a common transverse bore 19 which enters the valve chamber above the valve seat 13b, and a bore 12 bearing the valve chamber below the seat. During the inward stroke of the piston, the ball valve 3 rises to provide check action to a degree determined by the setting of a pin 16, and during the outward stroke the ball rests on the truncated conical upper face of a screwed plug 14 to allow the oil to flow freely past the valve seat.

    • 493,335. Hinges. PRATT, A. W., and ADAMS (VICTOR), Ltd., R. June 30, 1937, No. 18174. [Class 65 (ii)] A double-butt hinge, consisting of two integral vertical barrels 1, 2 accommodating check devices, has means constraining the door to swing only about the axis of the barrel appropriate to its direction of movement. When the door 4 swings in the direction X, Fig. 2, the upper door hinge plate 5 rotates with respect to the barrel 1 and operates the check device therein but when it swings in the direction Y the barrel 1 rotates about the axis of the barrel 2 to which it is rigidly attached and causes the barrel 2 to rotate with respect to the collar 2a of the door post bracket 2c and operate its check device. Thus, as the door swings from one side of the doorway to the other, the axis of rotation is transferred from one barrel to the other so that the lower hinge plate 7 must be adapted to change its axis of rotation and also must be securely attached to the cylinder about which it is rotating. The hinge plate 7 and the door-post hinge bracket 7a, Figs. 5 and 6, are each provided with a pair of lug-like parts 8 and 10, 12 and 13, one of each pair being a shallow hollow cylinder 10, 13 and the others 8, 10 having an arcuate rib 9, 15. The upstanding parts 10a, 13a of the cylinders 10, 13 are, when the hinge is assembled, rotatable in the lower ends of the barrels 1, 2, and when the door is in the closed position the cylinders 13, 10 accommodate the ribs 9, 15. If the door is swung in the direction X, the arcuate rib 15 will rotate about the axis of the barrel 1 and move through the opening 11 in the cylinder 10, whilst the cylinder 13 will also rotate about the axis of the barrel 1 and cause the opening 14 to move into a position out of register with the end of the rib 9 so that it is impossible to move this rib out of the cylinder 13. If the door is swung in the direction Y the rib 15 rotates in the cylinder 10 and opening 14 of the cylinder 13 passes freely over the rib 9. The rib 15 is retained in the cylinder 10 as its end moves out of register with the opening 11 during this movement.

    • An assembly for the coupling of a multi-duct conduit system for sealing the outer and inner ducts of adjacent conduit sections in end to end relationship. The body portion is adapted to receive a plurality of ducts into bores in the body housing so that a first plurality of ducts enters and is insertible into the body portion at a first end and the second adjoining plurality of duct members are insertible into the body portion on the second end, the first and second portions of ducts being slidably engaged into the body portion and meeting substantially at a center point within the body portion, for defining a continuous pathway within the ducts for housing transmission lines therewithin. There is further provided an end portion on the ends of the body member to serve as a guide for the ducts entering the bores so that the ducts are not damaged as they enter the bores of the body member.
