摘要： Picture or decorative pattern is made by a form of embroidery on a sheet of paper (13) mounted on a layer of expanded plastics such as polystyrene. A picture of pattern is first drawn on the paper (13). A special tool (12) with a flat end having two points is used to pierce a hole in the paper (13). The tool (12) is then used to force the end of a short length of wool or braid (11) through the hole and into the polystyrene. When the tool (12) is withdrawn the elasticity of the paper and polystyrene retains the end of the wool. The other end of the wool is forced into a second hole together with the end of a second length of wool. This process is repeated until the picture is covered with wool or braid of different colours.

摘要： A stereo receiver is described which is capable of receiving any two or more of the five currently proposed AM stereo system broadcast signals. The multisystem receiver includes circuitry which is used in various configurations to demodulate the stereo signal components from broadcast signals of any one of two or more of the proposed systems. Selection of appropriate elements of the receiver's circuitry for demodulating any one of the received signals is performed automatically in response to the detection of the presence of a corresponding pilot signal which is unique for each of the five different AM stereo systems that have been proposed. The receiver includes apparatus which detects the presence of such pilot signals and controls the automatic switching of such receiver circuitry. Also described is the application of such apparatus for reliably detecting the presence of the desired pilot signal in a single system stereo receiver.

摘要： A data storage device can be validated through a network before the data storage device can be operated. In one embodiment, the data storage device includes a magnetic disk and a head assembly having a read/write head which reads and writes data from/on the magnetic disk. The data storage device further includes a controller configured to control the head assembly to read/write data to/from the magnetic disk. In addition, the data storage device includes a secure area of the magnetic disk containing a private key. The private key is one of a pair of cryptographically linked keys and the other of the cryptographically linked keys is a public key. Furthermore, the data storage device includes a memory located within the controller containing an auxiliary key, the auxiliary key being used to encrypt or decrypt the private key.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention recite a method of preserving data on a hard disk drive. In one embodiment, a first copy of data is read from at least one sector of a hard disk drive and stored in a first location. A second copy of the data is stored in a non-volatile memory location of the hard disk drive. The first copy of the data is then modified to create a modified copy. The second copy of the data is then used to verify that the modified copy of data has been correctly written to the at least one sector of the hard disk drive.

摘要： Bit and byte synchronization for sampling and decoding a data string is provided a single data field u. The data string x has pre-pended to it a short string of is (ones), followed by u to yield a string y= . . . 1111, u, x. The string is pre-coded by convolution with 1/(1⊕D2). PRML-sampling of y starts at an initial phase, and vectors are obtained from that string by sampling at pre-selected phases following the initial sampling point. The vectors of y are compared with vectors corresponding to PRML samples of an initial set of bits in u obtained at predetermined phases. The pair of y, u vectors exhibiting the minimum Euclidian distance yields a sampling correction value by which the initial sampling phase is corrected and a new initial sampling point preceding x is determined. Here, bit and byte synchronization have been achieved and sampling of x proceeds at the corrected phase, from the new initial sampling point.

摘要： In a disk drive that uses large block sizes (e.g., 4 KB) for storing data and that responds to read and write requests from a client that uses small block sizes (e.g., 512 bytes), at least the starting and ending 4K blocks of read data are cached. Since much disk data that is the subject of a write request is first read, upon a subsequent write request the drive controller determines whether the starting and ending blocks are in cache and if so, writes new data to those blocks, calculates a full ECC for them, and then calculates ECC for intervening blocks and writes new data to the intervening blocks. If both starting and ending blocks are not in cache the drive controller executes either a high data integrity routine or a high performance routine as chosen by the user.
