[Class 103 (i).] Brakes and clutches comprise two swinging weights mounted radially opposite to one another and acting on one end of a spreading ring having substantially a complete arc of circumferential contact the other end of the spreading ring bearing against a separate projection. In a device for raising a load spreading rings 9, 10 are mounted on the doublebevelled edge of rings 2, 6 which are connected by bolts 4, 5 on which are pivoted the swinging weights 7, 8. A casing 16 is rotatably mounted on the disc 2 and'is closed by a cover 17 which secures in position an internally threaded disc 18. A crank pin 19 is adapted to be screwed into the plate 18 forcing the plate 6 to the left and thus spreading the rings 9, 10 into engagement with the casing, whereupon the device is turned as a whole and is held by the pawl 21 when turning movement ceases. On a slight reversal of the crank pin the rings 9, 10 and the casing are disengaged and the toothed wheel 3 and the spreading ring system are free to rotate in reverse direction under the action of the load. This causes the weights 7, 8 to swing out and by means of projections 11, 12 spread the rings and subject to pressure the layer of lubricant between the rings and the casing which is held by the pawl 21 thus retarding the descent. One end of each of the rings bear against stops on the discs 2, 6. The weights in order to balance the action are connected by pins 14, 15 and a disc 13, which the weights are recessed to receive. The weights may be reversed on their pivots to adapt the mechanism for the opposite direction of rotation. A single spreading ring only may be used by omitting one of the projections 11, 12 or 32, 33, Fig. 3. The device may also be modified for operation in both directions and as a clutch. In a clutch operated by swinging weights, as shown in Fig. 4, rotation of the driving disc 23 causes weights 26, 27 on either side of the disc to swing about bolts 24, 25 and spread by means of projections 32, 33 spreading rings 28, 29 into engagement with the interior of the belt pulley 49. The ends of the rings also engage projections 30, 31 on the disc 23. The movement of the weights is controlled by pins 34, 35 in slots in the weights. The pins are carried by discs 36, 37 which are connected by screws 40 and distance pieces passing through arcuate slots in the disc 23. The movement of the screws in the slots and thus of the weights is controlled by retarding means of a liquid, pasty, pulverulent or granular nature such as oil, consistent grease, graphite or balls in the slots movement of which from one part of the slot to the other is controlled by an adjustable screw 42. The space around the weights is also filled with this retarding means. Adjustable screws 43 in the disc 23 limit the move ment of the discs 36, 37. The pins 34, 35 may be used as the retarding means and are then connected to pistons moving in cylindrical hollow spaces in the disc 23, air acting as a retarding medium the flow of which to and from the spaces is controlled through slots in one screw covered more or less by screwing another screw therein. The stroke of the pistons is limited by means of the first screw.

    • 215,253. Kimmel, R. Sept. 10, 1923. Winches.-Comprises a combined bearing-plate, gear casing, brake drum, and standard or support for a winch. As applied to a wall winch, the wall plate 1, forming the sole supporting means, is extended forwardly in conical formation to enclose the gearing and to provide bearings therefor by means of apertures 9, besides being formed with a ring 10 the internal surface of which acts as a brake ring. Beyond the conical part, a sleeve extending still further forward provides two bearings for the operating shaft 13 and a long bearing 7 for the drum. The extreme forward end 14 of the sleeve, which in the construction shown supports the drum casing, may in some instances provide a bearing support for power operating means. The bearing-plate may be extended as shown in dotted lines to form a pedestal winch. In the case of winches having bearings or supports at both ends, the bearing-plate is extended to form one of the standards or supports and at its forward end it supports a sleeve which surrounds the driving shaft and is supported in a similar bearing at the other end of the winch.
