摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new prosthetic spinal disc nucleus body to be implanted deeply to the human disc.
SOLUTION: This elongated pillow-like prosthetic spinal disc nucleus body 10 is made of a hydrogel core and a flexible constraining jacket 14 surrounding the hydrogel core 12 and allowing expansion and contraction of the hydrogel core 12, and implanted into a human inter vertebral spinal disc 32. The hydrogel core 12 has a length near an arrow-like diameter of disc nucleus of a human, a width smaller than the length, and a height smaller than the length or width. The hydrogel core will expand and contract in a desired fashion in response to various loads placed on the spinal tract when the hydrogel core absorbs and releases the fluid.

SOLUTION: The spinal disc nucleus prosthesis 20 is implanted into the nucleus cavity of the spinal disc defined by a pair of vertebrae forming end plates facing to each other. The spinal disc is equipped with a substantially inelastic constraining jacket 24 having a maximum volume smaller than the volume of the nucleus cavity, and an amorphous polymer core which is the amorphous polymer core 22 flowed into the constraining jacket so as to become a smaller volume than the maximum volume of the constraining jacket and is configured to generate an internal pressure in the constraining jacket by expanding to the maximum volume of the constraining jacket. 摘要： An occlusion device for occluding a defect in a spinal disc anulus, including a plate and a retention device. The plate defines an anulus contact face. The retention device extends from the contact face of the plate and defines an anulus engagement portion. The retention device is deflectable relative to the plate such that in a deployed state, the retention device biases the plate against material disposed between the contact face of the plate and the anulus engagement portion. Upon final deployment, the retention device bears against the exterior surface of the anulus, biasing the plate into contact with the interior surface of the anulus. In a preferred embodiment, the retention device includes a pair of L-shaped arms each extending in an opposing, angular fashion from the plate.

摘要： An occlusion device for occluding a defect in a spinal disc anulus having interior and exterior surfaces, and defining an internal cavity. The occlusion device includes a first member, a second member, and a connector. The first member is configured for deployment within the internal cavity and placement against the interior surface of the anulus. The second member is configured for placement against the exterior surface of the anulus. Finally, the connector connects the first and second members and is preferably adapted to provide an adjustable spacing therebetween. With this construction, the device is configured such that upon final deployment, the first and second members are rigidly secured against the anulus, at opposite surfaces thereof, in a region of the defect via the connector.

摘要： A method of manufacturing a prosthetic spinal disc nucleus. The method including forming a hydrogel core from a hydrogel material in a natural state. The hydrogel material in the natural state is characterized by a natural swelling rate. The hydrogel is treated in an alkaline solution having a pH of at least about 8. This treatment transitions the hydrogel core from the natural state to a treated state characterized by an elevated swelling rate. The elevated swelling rate is greater that the natural swelling rate. The resultant, treated hydrogel core forms at least a portion of a prosthetic spinal disc nucleus. In one particular embodiment, the hydrogel core is inserted into a constraining jacket. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a prosthetic spinal disc nucleus including a hydrogel core having the elevated swelling rate.
