Boxes.-A flexible sleeve 4 of rubber or the like for closing the end of a bearing 3, Fig. 1, for an angularly and axially movable shaft 2 is formed at one end with an internal annular groove 6 adapted to engage a lip 7 on the bearing, while the other end is provided with one or more internal grooves carrying rings 10 of metal, fibre, felt, or the like, which engage the shaft. The ring 10 may be in the form of a helix. The sleeve 4 may be applied to the end of the stationary member 28, Fig. 4, of an adjusting device for a Bowden-wire cable, the ring 10 engaging the cable 27. The interior of the sleeve forms a chamber for lubricant. The sleeve may also be applied to the end of the guide 32, Fig. 5, for a valve stem 33. For enclosing the spring 17, Fig. 3, encircling the end of a flexible brake cable 16, the groove 6 in the sleeve 4 engages a disc 26 carried by the cable, while the rings 10 telescope over a flexible sleeve 20 having a groove engaging a lip 22 on the abutment 23 for the spring. The composite enclosure thus produced contains lubricant.

    • 232,779. Little, C. R. April 28, 1924. Gaiters for suspension springs are formed of a jointless sleeve of material, such as rubber which may be wholly or partly reinforced by fabric, the sleeve fitting closely on and being carried solely by the spring. The gaiter 1, Fig. 1, is preferably provided at each end with a pair of flanges 3 between which contractile means may be employed in order to give a fluid-tight joint, absorbent material 4 being provided if desired. An enlargement 16 may be provided to enclose the usual clip, the enlargement having a lubricating- aperture 6 closed by a closure cap 9. In Fig. 5, another form of closure 11 is shown provided with a bulbous end 13. The gaiter may have a lubricating channel provided in the interior of the gaiter, with or without auxiliary grooves. Fig. 7 shows an auxiliary sleeve 17 for enclosing the shackle. The side walls of the gaiter may be concave or tapered so that all the leaves may be adequately lubricated.

    • 404,461. Loud - speakers. LITTLE, C. R., 5, Primrose Hill Street, Coventry. Jan. 16, 1933, No. 1352. [Class 40 (iv).] A baffle board for a loud-speaker comprises concentric members 15, 16 of wood, moulded material, impregnated paper &c. interconnected by a relatively flexible annulus 17 of metal (brass or copper), vellum, linen &c., the loud-speaker 11 being mounted behind an aperture 20 in the inner member 15. As shown, each of the members 15, 16 is formed of two wooden layers between which the inner and outer edges of the annulus 17 are clamped. The remaining space between the layers may be packed with paper &c. 18, which, if desired, may be extended alongside the clamped portions of the annulus. The baffle may form the front wall of a cabinet. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the outer member 16 is itself formed of two concentric parts, the space between which is packed with cotton wool or other sound deadening material 21. These parts are held together by leather, rubber, fabric &c. bridging members 22 arranged on each side of the parts and formed either as single annuli or as a plurality of strips.

    • 264,716. Little, C. R. May 18, 1926. Hinges.-The pivotal joints of rods and levers and other linkwork members are provided with a dust-excluding and lubricant-retaining cover of moulded rubber, the parts of which are carried by the jointed members and have a running joint connection. As applied to the joint between a drag link 2 and the drop arm 3 of the steering gear of a motor vehicle, a cylindrical sleeve 6 of moulded rubber is secured by a clip 7 to the link 2, and the other part of the cover is of cupshape with a sleeve 10 that is clipped or sprung around the arm 3 carrying the usual ball joint. The material at 12 at the mouth of the bowl is reduced and enters a branch 8 on the sleeve 6. these parts being connected by a collar 11 and groove 13, as shown. The parts may be engaged by a slight compression of one and compression of the other part, and form when assembled a running joint. The outer end of the sleeve 6 may be provided with a detachable cap which encloses the end of the link 2 and the nut 14. Either part may also be provided with a filler neck for the introduction of lubricant. The two parts may also be connected by a surrounding band 18, as shown in Fig. 3. The rubber cover is also described as applied to a rod pivotally attached to an intermediate part of a link of steering gear. The application of the cover to the joint of a crank and connecting rod is specified. Specification 221,700, [Class 12 (ii), Lubricating passages &c.], is referred to.
