    • An adhesive is made by curing a composition comprising a curable natural or synthetic rubber, a tackifier which is liquid at and above 25 DEG C. in an amount from about 50 to about 500 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the elastomeric polymer, and a phenolic resin for curing said polymer in an amount from about 5 to about 75 parts by weight per hundred parts by weight of elastomeric polymer, said liquid tackifier being in an amount at least equal to that of the phenolic curing agent. Specified elastomeric polymers are natural and reclaimed rubber, butadiene-styrene copolymers, isobutylene-isoprene copolymers and polychloroprene. Specified tackifiers are liquid polyisobutylenes, broken chain butene resins, liquid polyterpenes, liquid p-coumarone-indene resins, liquid rosin derivatives, hydroabietyl alcohol, liquid petroleum polymers and liquid styrene derivatives. Specified phenolic resins are condensates of formaldehyde with p-butyl phenol, p-t-amyl phenol or p-phenyl phenol. Reinforcing pigments or fillers which may be included in the compositions are zinc oxide, calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide. Various formulations are exemplified. The cured compositions are used in adhesive tapes. U.S.A. • This invention relates to a novel pressure-sensitive adhesive formed of a liquid and solid rubber which is substantially resin free. Preferably the adhesive is formed of a weight ratio of solid rubber to liquid rubber of about 1:0.5 to about 1:7. When a thermoplastic rubber is used, an endblock associating resin can also be used with the block copolymer solid rubber composition for improving adhesion and hold properties of the composition. A minor amount of tackifier can be added without affecting the improved properties of the present invention. The adhesive can preferably be cross-linked with a sulfur, sulfur-bearing agents, peroxide, isocyanate or an aluminum isopropylate composition. These adhesives exhibit improved adhesion in cold weather and oily surface applications and other properties. The pressure-sensitive adhesives can be used in health care, industrial and drug delivery systems. The adhesives can be processed by a hot melt process for providing improved ecological benefits.

    • 872,136. Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape. KORPMAN, R. June 8, 1959, No. 19566/59. Class 140. A normally tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises essentially a flexible backing and a normally tacky and pressuresensitive adhesive coated.on one surface of the backing and containing within its structure a heat-modifiable agent, visible when viewing the back surface of the tape, which changes in colour visible to the human eye upon exposure of the tape to elevated temperatures normally employed in sterilization. The adhesive may contain a heat-activatable agent adapted to, and present in amount sufficient to, render the adhesive composition resistant to softening at elevated temperatures. The heatmodifiable agent comprises an organic dye or a dye intermediate or derivative, or a metallic salt composition, which exhibits a colour change upon exposure to temperatures in excess of about 210‹ F., or compounds which produce a coloured material when subjected to such temperatures. Examples of heat-modifiable agents are given. The heat-modifiable agent may be incorporated in a coating on one surface of the flexible backing such as in a backsize coating containing a plasticized nitrocellulose lacquer, or release coating, or in a coating on the backsize coating e.g. as a discontinuous coating in a predesigned configuration. The heat-modifiable agent may be incorporated in the adhesive mass or in a lamina, which may be in the form of a reinforcing element, between the flexible backing and the adhesive, the flexible backing being transparent or translucent. The heat-modifiable agent may be responsive 'to exposure to steam. The flexible backing may be of a fibrous material e.g. woven fabric or paper, which may incorporate an extensible bonding material or size e.g. rubber latex, glue-glycerine, rosin, or polymeric materials, or may be a polymeric film material e.g. " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polyesters or vinyl chloride. The intermediate lamina may include adhesive, primer coatings as in Specification 570,523, thin rope paper or tissue, or strands of longitudinal filaments of glass, cotton, nylon, rayon or acetate. The adhesive may comprise natural rubber, synthetic rubbers, e.g. butadiene-styrene or - acrylonitrile, vinyl ethers, polychloroprene, acrylates, polyisobutylene, butyl rubber, reclaim rubber, and mixtures thereof. Tackifiers, fillers, antioxidants, curing agents, heat stabilizers, dyes or pigments are also specified. Specification 705,908 also is referred to.
