    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to use a greatly high operational voltage, thereby allowing an operation of multi-LEDs or an LED type illumination unit without needing a transformer between a power source and a load.SOLUTION: There are provided a method and a device for controlling LEDs connected in series. Two or more LEDs are connected in series between a first node and a second node, and when an operational voltage is applied to between these nodes, a direct current flows through between these nodes. One or more controllable current paths are connected in parallel to at least a first LED, and the direct current is bypassed at least partially to at least the first LED. A controller monitors at least one parameter representing the operational voltage to determine the maximum number of LEDs connected in series which can be driven with the operational voltage, and if the maximum number is smaller than the total number of all LEDs connected in series, the controllable current path is controlled so as to increase an amount of the direct current to be bypassed to the at least one LED.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for controlling a light source in a networked lighting system by using a computer. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, a plurality of the LED-based lighting systems are arranged as computer-controllable "light strings". Applications contemplated for such light strings include, but are not limited to, decorative and entertainment-oriented lighting applications (e.g., Christmas tree lights, display lights, theme park lighting, video and other game arcade lighting, etc.). Via computer control, one or more light strings may provide a variety of complex temporal and color-changing lighting effects. In one embodiment, lighting data are communicated in a given light string in a serial manner, according to a variety of different data transmission and processing schemes. In another embodiment, individual lighting systems of the light strings are coupled together via a variety of different conduit configurations to provide for easy coupling and arrangement of a plurality of light sources constituting the light string. In yet another embodiment, small LED-based lighting systems capable of being arranged in a light string configuration are manufactured as integrated circuits including a data processing circuit and a control circuit for LED light sources, and are packaged along with LEDs for convenient coupling to a conduit to connect a plurality of lighting systems.
