    • 20,951. Pratt, P. W. Oct. 3, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Treads for floors &c.-Relates to res i l i e n t treading pieces for. the soles and heels of boots and shoes, applicable also to other articles. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a heel. The treading piece consists of a plug b composed of a strip of "frictioned" material, preferably canvas cut with its threads extending diagonally, and coiled to form a cylinder. This plug is embedded in, so as to be flush with the tread of the heel, which is composed of vulcanized india-rubber a, and the central upper surface of which is hollowed out, as at c, so that when attached to the boot, a cushion of air is enclosed between the attached heel and the boot. The concavity c is sometimes provided with a number of concentric raised rings, or with studs, which are integral with the rubber a. In another form, the plug b is composed of a number of strands consisting of parallel fibres of textile material, each strand being coated with rubber solution, which when vulcanized, causes the strands to form a rope from which the plug is cut. These strands are preferably provided with leid cores, the ends of which are exposed to increase the frictional hold of the tread. The upper surface of the plug shown in Fig. 2 is formed with a lip, made by compressing the plug before its vulcanization and while it is still pliable. This lip serves firmly to secure the plug in the rubber a. In another method of effecting this, a series of indentations are engaged by corresponding projections on the rubber a ; or a lip may be made on each surface of the plug b so as to form a peripheral groove, which is engaged by the rubber a.

    • 11,898. Pratt, P. W. May 22. Sole and heel protectors ; slipping, preventing.-Relates to protecting-treads for the soles and heels of boots and shoes that are formed of rubber and a wear-resisting material, such as canvas, duck, &c., and consists in a method of connecting the canvas to the rubber. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the layer b of fabric is preferably connected to the unvulcanized rubber layer a during the process of vulcanization, the fabric b being previously frictioned or treated with a solution of rubber. The layer b may be corrugated or plaited, as shown in Fig. 2, the sides of the folds being united together during the vulcanization of the layer a. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the layer b of fabric is provided with two series of grooves at rightangles to each other, forming projections b which roughen the surface. In this form, the layer b entirely covers the layer a, instead of being surrounded by a flush margin of the layer a as in the modification in Fig. 1. In order to increase the contacting area between the layers a, b and so to give a firmer union, and also to give a neat appearance by preventing the layer b from puckering, this layer is formed with a number of corrugations c around its periphery. During vulcanization of the tread, the layer b is formed with grooves d, d', which compensate for the spreading of the layer b and also render the tread less liable to slip.
