    • 236,728. Johnson, J. Y., (Smith, Drum, & Co.). July 8, 1924. Agitating materials and liquids together; cages for materials, lifting and discharging arrangements for.- Dyeing &c. machines of the kind comprising a. vat 1 containing a perforated receptacle 5 having an agitating device 27 rotatably mounted therein and motor-operated means for elevating the receptacle from the vat and returning it to the vat are provided with means whereby the agitating device is independently moved to an elevated position in advance of the receptacle, means being also provided and operable by the movement of the receptacle whereby the operation of the elevating means is interrupted when the receptacle has been elevated to the discharging position and also when it has returned to its normal position. The receptacle 5 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 4 and is provided at each side with an arm 6 connected by a rod 7 with a bell-crank lever 8 pivoted at 9. Each lever 8 engages a cam 10 on the inside of a toothed wheel 11 mounted one at each side of the vat body 1 on a shaft 12. The wheels 11 are rotated, to cause the cams 10 to act on the levers 8 so as to elevate the receptacle 5 to Fig. 6 position, by an electric motor 15 acting through a pinion 17 on the motor shaft engaging a toothed wheel 8 on a shaft 19 which has a worm 20 engaging a, worm wheel 21 on a shaft 22 journaled in the body 1 and having at each end a pinion 23 engaging with the wheels 11. The motoroperated agitating device 27 is carried by arms 26, which also support a hood 30, the arms 26 being pivoted on a shaft 25 journaled in the body 1 and being each provided with a cam roller 28 which is adapted to be operated on by its cam 10 to elevate the agitating device 27 before the cam 10 co-operates with the lever 8 to raise the receptacle 5. The motor 15 is controlled bv a double throw switch provided in a housing 45 on one side of the body 1. a hand operated lever 46 for operating the switch being mounted on one end of a short shaft 56. An arm 55 secured on the shaft 56 is connected by a rod 57 with an arm 58 on a shaft 59 which carries a cam 60 having a V-shaped recess occupied by the lower end of a bell-crank lever 61 pivoted at 62 in the body 1 and having slung from a pivot-pin 63 on the other arm a weighted arm 64, which, in the normal position of the lever 61 corresponding to the neutral position of the lever 46 shown in Fig. 1, bears against a brake-shoe 65 carried by a sleeve 66 slidable on the shaft 12 and forces the shoe against a brake-drum 67 carried by the wheel 18. On movement of the lever 46 either to the. right or left, however, the lever 61 is forced outwardly from the bottom of the notch and its upper arm is elevated carrying with it the weight arm 64, the pressure of the weight being thereby removed from the shoe 65 and the motor 15 allowed to start. On the inner end of the shaft 56 is mounted a lever 47 to which are pivotally secured rods 70, 71 respectively attached to levers 72, 73 pivoted at 74, 75 respectively to the body 1, the lever 72 occupying a position in the path of one of the arms 26 and the lever 73 a position in the path of one of the arms 6. In the operation of the machine, after the dyeing process has proceeded a sufficient length of time, the lever 46 is moved to the left, the motor 15 started and the agitating device 27 and recepacle 5 elevated to the positions shown in Fig. 6. This movement of the. lever 46 to the left moves the upper end of the lever 73 to the right into the path of the arm 6. which, as it moves downwardly and inwardly, engages the lever 73 .so as to cause it to move the lever 46 back to the neutral position, thereby stopping the motor and preventing further movement of the receptacle 5. After discharge of the goods the lever 46 is moved to the right so as to reverse the motor 15 and drive the cams 10 in the opposite direction, the agitating device 27 and receptacle 5 descending by gravity to their Fig. 1 position. The movement of the lever 46 to the right to restart the motor i5 elevates the lever 72 into the path of one of the arms 26, which, as it approaches its normal depressed position, bears against the lever 72 to move the lever 46 to its neutral position thereby stopping the motor 15 and applying the brake 65.
