[Class 97 (i)] A product which absorbs ultra-violet radiation and can be applied to a surface in the form of a protective layer consists of a transparent support such as a varnish, lacquer, &c. containing an oxymethylcoumarin or oxymethylcoumarins such as 4-methylesculetin and /or 4-methylumbelliferone, which are preferably added to the support in an alkaline medium, the oxymethylcoumarin being dissolved in methyl alcohol &c., with the addition of caustic soda or other alkaline substance and then incorporated in the varnish &c. support. A suitable product contains per kilogram 10 to 15 gms. of 4-methylumbelliferone, 0À5 to 1 gm. of 4-methylesculetin and 0À1 to 0À5 gm. of caustic soda. Other absorbent substances, such as quinine salts, may be added to the support. The product can be used to protect the surface of a plate of glass, &c., or that of a fragile or glossy article.

[Class 75 (i)] A chamber containing an electric heating- device 6 separates an annular vaporizing- chamber 3 and a vapour superheating-chamber 2 surrounding an open-ended combustion chamber 1. Liquid fuel is supplied to the chamber 3 through a regulating-device ensuring a constant level and the vapour passes through passages 4 to the chamber 2 from which it issues through nozzles 5 into the chamber 1 to burn with air entering through a flared extension 7. Vaporization is effected initially by the heating-device 6 the circuit to which may be interrupted by a thermal switch when sufficient heat to effect vaporization is being derived from the burner flame. An electric igniting-device may be put in operation by the completion of the circuit to the heating-device or by the admission of fuel to the chamber 3 and is stopped by the thermal switch.
