[Class 138 (ii)] A washing-apparatus comprises a bell 2 secured to the lower end of a tube 1 which serves as a handle and supports an electromotor 7 which reciprocates a rod 5 within the tube through the worm gearing 9, 10, crank 11 and connecting rod 12. A plunger 3 open at the top and having a perforated bottom is connected to the lower end of the rod 5 whereby it reciprocates relatively to the bell 2. In a modification, Fig. 2, the plunger 3 having an open bottom and a perforated top is secured to the tube 1 and the bell 2 is secured to the rod 5, the pins 2b connecting the bell to the rod passing through axial slots 1 in the tube. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the inner plunger comprises a rubber diaphragm 3 secured to the rod 5 and engaging an annular groove in the bell 2 and secured thereto by a spring ring 16.

    • 213,074. Schulz, P., and Jakowitsch, J. Feb. 14, 1923. Chucks.- A bevel-closing chuck has a slow differential closing movement and a quick direct opening movement. Wedge jaws 3 are moved axially by a sliding ring 4, prevented from rotating by a pin 20 and engaged by a nut 5 having external teeth meshing with an internally toothed ring 7. This ring has a slightly larger number of teeth than the nut and is freely rotatable in an eccentric rib 13 carried by a sleeve 12, the rib fitting between a flange 15 and a projection 16 on the ring in order to communicate axial movement from the sleeve to the ring. In operation, the jaws are closed by sliding the ring 7 to engage a projection 11 on the ring with a projection 9 on the chuck body and holding the sleeve 12 against rotation, when the ring will describe an eccentric movement relatively to the nut and will slowlv rotate the latter about the ring 4. The jaws are opened by sliding the sleeve to the left, as seen in Fig. 1, and so engaging a slot 14 on the sleeve with the projection 16 cn the ring, when retardation of the sleeve will retard rotation of the nut relatively to the ring 4. A pin 18 limits the axial motion of the sleeve. Screwing die-heads; taps.-The chuck may be used for cutting internal or external screw threads by forming the jaws as dies, the pressure of the jaws being directed inwardly or outwardly as the case may be.
