    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing monopentaerythritol of high purity.SOLUTION: The method for producing monopentaerythritol of high purity includes steps of: allowing formaldehyde to react with acetoaldehyde in an aqueous solution in the presence of a strongly basic hydroxide; evaporating the obtained reaction mixture to obtain a solid content of 50 to 70 wt.%, and then cooling; separating crystals of pentaerythritol thus produced; re-dissolving the pentaerythritol crystals to prepare an aqueous mother liquid having a solid content of 35 to 55 wt.%; purifying the aqueous mother liquid and crystallizing monopentaerythritol of high purity at a temperature of 40 to 90°C; separating the crystals from the aqueous mother liquid; circulating the residual aqueous mother liquid to the step of re-dissolving or subjecting the residual aqueous mother liquid to another treatment to produce monopentaerythritol of low purity.
