    • A thermal pack 1, primarily for therapeutic use, has a flexible, impervious outer container or pouch 2 that is sealed to retain a liquid 5 inside. The pack is capable of maintaining its sealed integrity when heated to at least 80°C in a microwave oven. A non-rigid, absorbent filling 4 is located within the pouch and is capable of absorbing at least eight times its own weight of the liquid. The pouch is a laminate of a stretch-resistant fabric (e.g. woven from nylon 6,6 fibres) and an impervious elastomeric polymer such as polyethylene. The compliant absorbent filling includes superabsorbent fibres 6 (such as sodium polyacrylate) adhered to a backing sheet 7. The liquid may be water, present in a quantity that is at least eight times the weight of the superabsorbent fibres, and containing an antimicrobial preservative. The absorbent filling may include woven or nonwoven textile material 8 such as cellulosic fbres. The pouch is preferably vacuum sealed.

    • A heat pack capable of being heated to at least 55 .degree.C is provided and comprises a flexible impervious outer container capable of being sealed to retain a liquid such as water therein and of maintaining its sealed integrity when heated to at least the aforesaid temperature. A porous, non-rigid filling material, which can absorb at least its own weig ht of the liquid, is located in the container. Advantageously, the pack contains a weight of liquid in the range 250 g to 1250 g, which liquid comprises water or compounds comprising one or more hydroxyl groups, or a mixture of water and such hydroxyl group compounds. In order to prevent microbial growth within the liquid-filled, sealed container, a predetermined quantity of a preservative at an appropria te concentration is also added to the fill. The filling material is preferably either fibrous or spongy in nature and advantageously may compris e a textile material or paper which is either recycled or would otherwise be treated as scrap or waste. Preferably also, air is removed from the outer container prior to it being sealed. The pack is also capable of use as a negative heat pack, i.e. a cool pack.

    • 1,186,909. Bags. DEPENDABLE PACKS Ltd. 24 June, 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 53567/67. Heading B8K. [Also in Division B5] A web, which may be formed into an envelope package, comprises outer plies pl, p3 of paper and an intermediate ply p2 of backed corrugated paper sheet, and the outer plies are secured to each other along the edges, e.g. the upper edge in Fig. 1, the narrower intermediate ply p2 being secured to one of the outer plies p3 at least along its edge portions, e.g. 6. Preferably, the outer plies pl and p3 are respectively of calendered kraft paper coated with polyethylene and of a laminate comprising two webs of water-proof paper bonded together with their grains mutually perpendicular by a pitch-like adhesive. The envelope package is formed by folding the web at 1, with the coated kraft paper ply pl innermost, to form one edge of the package, stitching the opposed edge parts of the web at 7 to form the base of the package, and stitching the ends of the web at 8 to form the other edge 2 of the package. Before stitching, the edge parts and ends of the web are embraced by folded strips 9 of crepe paper.

    • A cooling container (1) comprises a double-walled pouch (2) with inner (3) and outer (4) flexible non-porous walls. Between the walls (3, 4) is contained an unencumbered temperature-retentive composition (7) capable of remaining pliable at temperatures at or below 0‹C. The pouch (2) defines an interior void (6) capable of being substantially surrounded by the temperature-retentive composition (7) whereby after pre-cooling of the pouch (2) heat transfer can occur between a material introduced into the pouch and the temperature-retentive composition (7) by the repeated application of external pressure to the outer wall (4) of the pouch (2). Preferably, the temperature-retentive composition (7) comprises a thixotropic gel which is capable of remaining pliable at a temperature of -18‹C whereby material introduced into the pouch can be kneaded by manual or mechanical manipulation of the container in order to cool it and induce it to change phase. It is intended that primary function of the invention is to provide a portable container which can be pre-cooled and then used for making individual portions of foodstuffs or drinks such as ice cream and similar confections from pre-packaged formulations previously stored at ambient temperatures.
