Lifting apparatus, particularly for maintenance work on airplane engines, comprises a base structure 10 supporting an L-shaped platform 19 on hydraulic jacks 20, 22. A first rectangular frame 35 is also mounted on hydraulic jacks 36, 38 supported by the base 10 so as to be able to pass freely through the cut-out in the platform 19. The vertical positions of the platform 19 and the frame 35 are adjusted by a control panel 94 mounted on the platform 19. A second rectangular frame 74 is mounted on the first frame 35 by four hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies 76 to 79, each of which is pivoted at either end to a respective corner of the two frames 35, 74. The attitude and elevation of the frame 74 may be controlled by a valve 90 of known form mounted on the frame 35. The frame 35 has cradle-like supports 92 for an engine to be handled and attached to an airplane. The hydraulic jacks 20, 22, 36, 38 may be as illustrated in Fig. 2. As shown, the jack is fully extended and comprises an hydraulic cylinder 50 mounted within a telescoping rectangular sleeve element 51. The upper end 58 of piston 56 supports two idler pulleys 59 carrying cables 60, 61 anchored to lugs 62, 63 on sleeve member 51 and to lugs 64, 65 on sleeve member 53. The sleeve member 53 has two idler pulleys 66 mounted at the upper end thereof around which cables 67, 68 are trained and are anchored to lugs 69, 70 on the sleeve member 52 and to lugs 71, 72 on sleeve member 54. Interlocking flanges on the sleeve members prevent any of the sleeves from being elevated too far.
