    • A radiotelephone includes a multifunctional headset that operates in two different modes. According to a first mode, the headset may be mounted on a radiotelephone body where it serves as a speaker and microphone for the radiotelephone. Also, the headset can be separated from the body of the portable radiotelephone and placed on the head of the user. In this mode of operation, the headset receives and transmits signals from and to the radiotelephone body during a call, thus providing hands-free operation. The headset can be attached to a user's head by an ear clip. The headset and body may include low power RF transceivers. The headset may contain power saving circuitry to minimize power drain from an internal battery. The battery may be recharged whenever the headset is fixed to the radiotelephone.

    • A method for bilateral identity authentication over a communication channel provides a secure method for authenticating the identity of the communicating parties and establishing a secret key. Each party computes an authentication challenge based on an exchanged value used in a key generation procedure. The authentication challenge is encrypted to the other party's public key. After receiving an encrypted authentication channel from the other party, each party deciphers the authentication challenge and generates an authentication response based on the authentication challenge. The authentication response includes bits that the challenging party cannot predict in advance to prevent fraudulent use of the authentication response by the challenging party or some other third party. After receiving an authentication response from the other party, each party verifies that the expected authentication response was received.

    • A miniaturizable wireless communications device is configured to redefine the roles of the primary front and rear surfaces of the device by positioning a large graphic display on the forward surface and a speaker on the rear surface. The associated keypad can be disposed on either or both of the rear surface or the graphic display (such as via a touchscreen). Alternatively, a pivotable flip can include the keypad and even the microphone. During operation, a user can turn the device around to orient the desired input surface for use (forward face up for display surface use and forward face down or away for telephone use).     • A message, e.g., a control message, a short message, a voice message or a data message, is transmitted on at least one of a first communications channel having a first redundancy level or a second communications channel having a second, higher redundancy level. A radio communications signal is received on one of the first communications channel and the second communications channel. The received radio communications signal is demodulated to recover the message using a first demodulation scheme if the radio communications signal is received on the first communications channel and using a second demodulation scheme if the radio communications signal is received on the second communications channel. According to an aspect of the invention, the received radio communications signal is coherently demodulated if the radio communications signal is received over the first communications channel and non-coherently demodulated if the radio communications signal is received over the second communications channel. According to another aspect, the message is transmitted on the first communications channel using a first modulation constellation, and transmitted on the second communications channel using a second modulation constellation representing a subset of the first modulation constellation. In other embodiments of the present invention, a first radio communications signal is transmitted representing the message encoded according to one of a first code or a second code that represents a concatenation of the first code and an additional code, such as an orthogonal code or a quasi orthogonal code. Related systems and apparatus are also described.
