    • A data storage tape cartridge is disclosed including a housing, a single tape reel, a storage tape, and a leader block. The housing includes a front, a back, a first side, a second side, a top, and a bottom. Further, the housing forms a leader block window, a lateral datum pad, and a longitudinal datum pad. The leader block window is formed at a corner defined by the front and the first side. The lateral datum pad is formed in the top. Finally, the longitudinal datum pad is formed in the front. The single tape reel is rotatably maintained within the housing. The storage tape is wrapped about the tape reel. The leader block is coupled to a leading end of the storage tape and is selectively secured to the housing at the leader block window. With this configuration, the lateral datum pad is configured to identify a top-to-bottom position of the tape reel. Similarly, the longitudinal datum pad is configured to identify a front-to-back position of the tape reel. In one preferred embodiment, the housing is formed from a plastic material and the datum pads are molded into the housing. In another preferred embodiment, the housing forms a registration slot for identifying a side-to-side position of the tape reel. Regardless, upon insertion of the data storage tape cartridge into a tape drive, the datum pads are engaged by corresponding registration devices of the tape drive to precisely align the tape reel. In another preferred embodiment, the first side forms a retention tab for selectively securing the leader block, and first and second notches above and below, respectively, the retention tab.

    • An insert and method of use for conjoining plastic tubular end portion to form a beadless weldment. The insert comprises a first core portion having a longitudinal axis and a first circumferential surface, and a second tubing contact portion having a longitudinal axis, a second inwardly facing surface and a third circumferential surface, with the second and third surface in concentric relation to each other, and the second tubing contact portion operatively connected to the first core portion. The first core portion and the second tubing contact portion are longitudinally movable relative to each other between a first conjoining configuration and a second removal configuration. In the first conjoining configuration, the first circumferential surface of the first core portion is oriented so that it is in supporting contact with the second inwardly facing surface of the second tubing contact portion, and the second tubing contact portion is further oriented so that the third circumferential surface of the second tubing contact portion is in supporting contact with the interior surfaces of the tubular end portions to be conjoined. In the second removal configuration, the first circumferential surface of the first core portion is oriented so that it is not in supporting contact with the second inwardly facing surface of the second tubing contact portion.

    • A system and method for transmitting aural signals across a wide area network (WAN) from a local phone coupled to a computer, e.g., a PC-phone, to a remote phone coupled to a KTS, PBX, or PSTN, for example. This capability is provided by the gateway unit of the present invention. The system of the present invention is quickly installed in a server or a personal computer coupled to a local area network. The system is connected to one or more of a PSTN, a private branch exchange, a key telephone system, a telephone, a facsimile machine, and a modem. In the case of voice transmission, a gateway unit translates received telephony signal into a format that is compatible with the telephone system or equipment connected thereto. The present invention can provide a voice quality that approaches, equals, or exceeds the voice quality of conventional telephone switched networks. This high voice quality is achieved by utilizing a high quality voice digitization algorithm on both the PC-phone and the gateway, by ensuring a low maximum network delay between the PC-phone and the gateway, by permitting a dynamic compensation for variations in network delay, and by utilizing a forward error correction technique for transmission over WANs that can recreate lost or delayed signals in a manner that recreates the signal so the lost signal is typically not detectable by a user.
