    • 1478. Smith, M. H. Jan. 21. Variable-speed gearing.-Relates to change-speed friction-ratchet gearing, suitable for motor omnibuses and vans, in which a variable crank on a driving- shaft is connected through links and balanced levers to a co-axial driven shaft. The pin E of the crank is secured to a plate D which slides transversely in a box C fast on the driving-shaft A. The plate D carries a rack G, which is actuated by a toothed pinion H connected through a spindle I with a screw L. A nut M upon the screw L has lugs N protruding through slots in the shaft A by which the nut may be moved longitudinally to vary the throw of the pin E, and consequently the velocity-ratio. Connecting-rods R ... R extend from the pin E outwards to levers T, which are pivoted upon bolts m upon a frame W and are balanced by suitable masses V. Power is transmitted from the levers T through pull-rods Z and friction ratchets to a disk a fast upon the driven shaft B. One form of ratchet is shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The disk a is preferably in duplicate with inturned flanges supporting a slider c. Rocking leveis d pivoted to the slider c are operated at their outer ends by a rod Z, and engage and grip the flanges at their inner ends. In another form, the rod Z is connected directly to the slider, which takes the form of a box h, Fig. 8, containing a number of spring toggle pawlsj.

    • 2729. Smith, M. H. Feb. 5. Coin-handling and like appliances ; counter fittings. -To facilitate the picking up of coins given as change in shops &c., the change is placed in the hollows a of a tray constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The coins are drawn by the fingers to the edge b of the step, against the thumb, so as to pick them up. The receiver can, if he wish, slide mixed coins over from the furthest and largest hollow into the other hollows, for convenience in counting. The cash trays may be of various shapes and of various materials, such as hard wood, vulcanite fibre, cast, stamped, or rolled metal, porcelain, or glass or other transparent material; when of glass &c., they can be used for advertising by placing a legend or device on the underside, see Fig. 7. A portion of the tray c, Fig. 7, may be ribbed or roughened for striking matches thereon. When the invention is applied to bank counters, one or more ribs of hard wood, ebonite, &c. are inserted in the counters ; Fig. 4 shows the rib f made of stamped metal.
