    • PURPOSE: To provide a garden usable also for purification of water, by laying pumice grains on the bottom floor of a water way, providing waterfalls or dams built of pumice in proper places, and constituting the garden in such a way that water is admitted from a filter column through the water way into a pond.
      CONSTITUTION: A pond 1 disposed with pumice 2 on a prebuilt side wall is communicated with the outflow side of a water way 8 disposed with pumice 2 on a prebuilt side wall. Pumice grains 15 are packed in the inflow side of the water way 8, and a filter column 4 to be fed with water from a water diffuser 16 in the upper part is provided successively to the water way. Mounds and shrubs are disposed around the same according to need, and stone bridges, paving stones, and lawns are disposed. Pumice is a kind of liparite, is light in weight, has excellent sticking and propagating properties of microorganisms, and is ideally suited as a filter media for a trickling filter and an immersion filter in a treatment for cleaning up water. Further pumice has excellent water absorptivity and water retention and therefore generation and rooting of moss and algae are improved.

    • An optical member inspection apparatus includes an inspection optical system having a light source, and a diffusing means for diffusing the light emitted from the light source. The diffusing means has a central portion and a peripheral portion. The diffusion transmittance of the peripheral portion is higher than the diffusion transmittance of the central portion. The inspection optical system is also provided with an image pick-up means to pick-up an image of the optical member to be inspected, and is positioned so as, to receive that light emitted from the light source and transmitted through the diffusing means and the optical member. A judging means is also provided, for judging whether or not the optical member has a defect, in accordance with image signals output from the image pick-up means.

    • An optical encoder comprises a measuring section and a scanning grating plate.
