    • A carburetor for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine which has for each cylinder a main combustion chamber defined above the piston in the cylinder and a sub-combustion chamber defined above the main combustion chamber and communicating with the latter through a torch nozzle. The carburetor has a main intake passage and a sub-intake passage for supplying a comparatively lean mixture and a comparatively rich mixture to the main and sub-combustion chambers respectively. The carburetor has a single throttle valve shaft extending across the main and sub-intake passages with a main throttle valve and a sub-throttle valve mounted on the valve shaft and disposed in the main and sub-intake passages respectively.The main and sub-throttle valves are attached to the single throttle valve shaft at the same attaching angle and have respective parallel surfaces and outer peripheral edge surface. The angle formed between the outer peripheral edge surface and the parallel surfaces of the main throttle valve and the angle formed between the outer peripheral edge surface and the parallel surfaces of the sub-throttle valve are different from one another so that the ratio of the open areas of the main and sub-intake passages is not constant as the throttle shaft is operated. Thereby, the ratio of weight of air introduced into the sub-combustion chamber to the weight of air introduced into the main combustion chamber can be controlled in accordance with the load condition of the engine.

    • A method and apparatus for compensating for increased engine idle speed upon breaking-in of an engine, comprising halting a throttle valve controlling admission of air-fuel mixture to the engine in an idling position of the engine by a stopper member and gradually and automatically shifting the halted idling position of the throttle valve in its closing direction to diminish the flow of air-fuel mixture to the engine to compensate for increased engine idle speed upon breaking-in of the engine. The gradual and automatic shifting of the idling position of the throttle valve is obtained by constructing either the throttle valve, or the stopper member or both with contact portions which are relatively easily worn or deformed so that as the portions undergo gradual wear or deformation, the throttle valve gradually moves in its closing direction to compensate for increase engine idle speed.

    • A first choke valve is mounted in a main intake passage carrying a lean mixture to a main combustion chamber, and a second choke valve is mounted in an auxiliary intake passage carrying a rich mixture to a relatively small auxiliary chamber. Spark ignition of the mixture in the auxiliary combustion chamber projects a flame through a torch nozzle connecting the chambers to ignite the lean mixture in the main combustion chamber. Control of the main choke valve for moderately cold starting or extremely cold starting is accomplished automatically by means of a control element driven by a heat responsive bimetal element, or by means of a manually operated control element. In either case, overtravel of the control element after the main choke valve closes stores energy in a spring to increase closing torque of the main choke valve, and also moves the auxiliary choke valve toward closed position, to improve engine startability under extremely cold conditions. Both choke valves open in response to complete firing of the engine.
