    • The controlling of an environmental attribute of a monitored space according to the geographic location of a mobile device 103. An application server 110 receives a present geographic location sent from a mobile device via a network 102. A lead time period for the mobile device to arrive at the monitored space from the present geographic location is calculated, and a setback point is determined by the application server, so that a setback recovery time period representing a length of time that the environmental attribute of said monitored space takes to be driven from the setback point to a set point, through controlling the environmental attribute means 130 in accordance with a drive relationship, is equal to or less than the lead time period. The environmental attribute may be a room temperature or a heated water reserve quantity at a predetermined temperature. The application server may send periodic probe requests to the mobile device requesting a present location of the device. A geofence area may be defined containing the monitored space and the setback point determined by the arrival time of the mobile device at the geofence area.

    • The adjusting of operative settings of a plurality of devices 140 related to a monitored space, in accordance with detected or expected presence of users by determining whether the distance of a mobile device 103 from the monitored space equals or exceeds a first distance threshold, and in response to determining that the distance of the mobile device from the monitored space does equal or exceed the first distance threshold, calculating a lead time period at the lapse of which the mobile device is projected to arrive at the monitored space, and selecting an operative mode of the plurality of devices based on the lead time period and adjusting the operative settings of each device based on the selected operative mode. The mobile device may send messages with geographic location information and receive requests for them. The operative settings of the plurality of devices may be adjusted based on recorded and stored established variable behaviours, a setback point and a setback recovery time period calculated from these behaviours and also from the total number of users. The plurality of devices may be home appliances or climate control systems.
