Lighting and extinguishing gas.-In apparatus for actuating gas cocks by increasing the pressure of gas in the mains, a weighted bell g or an equivalent diaphragm rests, in its lowest position, upon the screwthreaded extension v of the plug cock e, the seat of which is formed by a cone d which can be regulated to allow the device to serve for either an "evening" or a "night" lamp. So long as the bell g is in its lowest position, Fig. 1, it presses the valve e tightly upon its seat, and gas is supplied by the cock e to the channel n communicating with the by-pass. When, however, the pressure of the gas is increased, the. gas passing through a duct u in the cock e lifts the bell, causing the screw-threaded spindle v to rotate in a nut w depending from a disk w, which rests upon the lower extension k of the bell g, and is prevented from rotating by stops. The pitch of the screw v is such that the valve is turned through 120 degrees while the bell is moving from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3, gradually closing the by-pass channel n and opening the main channel h, the ports being so arranged that the main burner is lit from the pilot jet before the latter is extinguished. When the pressure of the gas is reduced and the bell g descends, the stop x prevents the disk w from rotating until the bell has sunk sufficiently to release the projection w from the stop. The disk w then rotates upon the spindle v and descends until it is stopped by the pin x . Upon again increasing the pressure of the gas, the valve e is turned through a further 120 degrees, the passage to the main burner remaining open, and that to the pilot jet closed. When the pressure is increased for the third time, the valve e turns through a further 120 degrees to its original position, in which the passage to the main burner is closed and that to the pilot jet open. The above positions are stated to be fur use with a lamp burning throughout the night. To adapt the device for use as an "evening" lamp, either the cone d or the casing a is turned through 60 degrees varying the position of the ports, so that in the first or " day " position the passage to the pilot jet only is open, in the second or " evening " position the passage to the main burner only is open, and in the third or "after midnight" " position the passage to the pilot-jet only is open. Should the rotation of the cone d or casing a displace the valve e, it is restored to its position by reciprocating the bell and the parts connected therewith by means of the rod y.
