摘要： A purging apparatus is disclosed for varying a level of molten glass in a glass making system, thereby purging molten glass contaminated with condensed particulate, such as platinum or platinum alloy particulate, from a standpipe connected with a vessel or conduit for holding or conveying molten glass, or from the vessel itself. The purging apparatus, comprising nested tubes and sealing gaskets, is inserted into the standpipe and sealed thereto, and a pressurized gas may be forced into the standpipe through the purging apparatus. The increased pressure in the standpipe forces the contaminated molten glass from the standpipe into the vessel or conduit so that it can be removed, such as by flowing through and out of the glass making system. The apparatus may also be used to apply a vacuum to the standpipe, wherein the decreased pressure in the standpipe or vessel increases a level of the molten glass to wash contaminants from the system.

摘要： The present invention is directed toward a method of reducing contamination of a glass melt by volatilized precious metal oxides that may condense on the stirrer shaft of a stirring vessel and fall back into the glass melt, by heating the shaft. In one embodiment, the stirrer shaft includes an interior cavity and a heating element disposed within the cavity. The heating element heats the shaft to a temperature sufficient to prevent volatilized materials from condensing on the surfaces of the shaft.

摘要： A substantially-isolated/controlled, limited-volume, gas-filled space (e.g., 113b) is formed over at least one free (open) surface of flowing molten glass in a manufacturing line used to produce glass sheets (137), e.g., a manufacturing line employing the fusion process to produce glass sheets suitable for use as substrates for liquid crystal displays. At least a portion of the space comprises a platinum-group metal, e.g., a platinum-rhodium alloy, which can serve as a source of platinum-group condensate defects. The use of the substantially-isolated/controlled, limited-volume, gas filled space substantially reduces the level of such platinum-group condensate defects in the glass sheets, e.g., by more than 50%.
